Let’s be honest majority of people don’t know anything about Chiropractic, how it works, what it can even do for their health etc. So let’s address some common misconceptions or ‘complaints’ people have about Chiropractic care. Yes, I often recommend higher frequency of adjustments starting off. It’s the quickest way to get people out of pain and helps retraining abnormal muscle patterns & structural alignment. I always ask about lifestyle (thoughts/stressors, traumas/injuries, and toxins/diet/meds/chemical exposures). It matters what your day to day looks like and a care plan for someone who sits 50hrs a week vs someone who is constantly moving/lifting can be very different. Everyone has a spine and should have it checked regularly for subluxation. Whether we are trying to correct a problem or prevent health conditions in the future. Yes we are a doctor’s office, but please bring in your families. It’s good for kids to see you prioritizing your health. Also I don’t like adjusting a spine without an exam that gives me insight to the current structure, especially if we are trying to improve said structure. Self care matters, and we are a health team, so I do expect you to do your part at home. It speeds up results, gives you more control over your health, and helps adjustments last longer. I know not every chiropractor would agree with me and maybe you don’t either, but hopefully this post at least stimulates some thoughts when it comes to your health and who you want to be a part of your health team.

- Just bc your bloodwork all comes back “within normal limits” doesn’t mean your body is functioning optimally. Especially if you’re having symptoms. The symptoms are there for a reason and not just in your head. Blood work can give great insight to the ongoing biochemistry that’s happening in your body, but it isn’t as black & white as your numbers fitting into the text book ranges. If you have symptoms, especially if they are affecting your everyday life, your health team has to look deeper into your numbers and how they are in relation with each other. I don’t recommend chasing symptoms, but I definitely don’t recommend ignoring them. The body is trying to tell you something, please listen to it and keep digging until you find the answers.

1- please please please do not let someone walk on your back or even bear hug ‘adjust’ you… I’ve had several patients come in with rib and back injuries that take more time than you’d think to heal bc of letting someone besides a chiro ‘pop their back’ . I know we make it look simple or easy, but it isn’t. We study for years how to get the correct angle, the precise amount of velocity and amplitude, and the decision making process on when to adjust and when not to. And don’t get me started on just making the spine ‘pop’ or ‘crack’, that sound (a cavitation) doesn’t mean that the bone actually went back into correct alignment. 2- yes, spinal surgeries can be necessary but most of the time we jump to those options way too quickly especially when you consider they permanently alter your spinal structure. They should be a last resting after conservative has been tired and given time to actually work. Chiropractic, physical therapy, and massage therapy should all be utilized to promote an environment the body can actually heal in before cutting and screwing in metal. 3- how does one restore proper spinal alignment and biomechanics if you haven’t taken a look to see what the structure actually is. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken X-rays and was alerted to condition that helped determine adjustment technique and plan of action. Many were conditions that were asymptomatic or didn’t have a specific pain pattern to identify. I don’t believe in just X-raying for the hell of it, but just waiting for certain pain symptoms to justify films increases the risk of missing significant findings or even cause injury.
