Transitions can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time.

A new school year often brings changing routines, earlier mornings, new teachers, new expectations, and a lot of uncertainty. Even positive change asks your nervous system to adjust.

If back-to-school feels harder than you expected—for you or your child—that doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. It means you're adapting.

Give yourself permission to take this season one day at a time.

At The Chrysalis Counseling Center, we welcome individuals who are ready to invest in their mental health, whether they're facing a specific challenge or simply seeking a deeper understanding of themselves. Our clients include children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief, relationship concerns, life transitions, chronic stress, identity exploration, and other emotional or behavioral challenges.

Many people come to us feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck. They may have experienced difficult life events, find themselves repeating unhelpful patterns, struggle to manage intense emotions, or simply recognize that what they've been doing is no longer working. Others come during periods of transition—becoming a parent, changing careers, ending a relationship, grieving a loss, or searching for greater purpose and balance.

Our team understands that no two healing journeys are the same. That's why we take an individualized, evidence-based, and trauma-informed approach to care. We work collaboratively with each client to understand their unique experiences, strengths, and goals, then tailor treatment using modalities such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Therapy, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy, Mindfulness, and other evidence-based interventions.

More than reducing symptoms, our goal is to help clients build lives that feel meaningful and sustainable. We help individuals develop practical coping skills, strengthen relationships, process difficult experiences, improve emotional regulation, increase self-awareness, and reconnect with their own resilience. Throughout the process, we provide a safe, compassionate space where clients feel seen, supported, and empowered to create lasting change.

At its heart, our work is about transformation. We believe healing happens when people are given the opportunity to understand themselves with compassion, discover their strengths, and move forward with confidence. We're honored to walk alongside our clients as they create lives that feel more connected, authentic, and fulfilling.

As the school year approaches, you may be thinking of how best to support your child this year. Navigating the school system when your child needs extra support can feel overwhelming. Understanding evaluations, knowing what accommodations actually help, and advocating in meetings can be a lot for parents to manage alone.

Dr. Susan Niznik, a school psychologist since 2012, has spent years on the other side of the table—conducting evaluations and helping schools create student support plans. Now she’s using that experience to help parents advocate confidently for their children.

Through one-on-one coaching, Dr. Niznik helps parents:
• Understand evaluation results and eligibility
• Navigate the IEP and 504 process
• Identify meaningful accommodations and services
• Prepare for school meetings
• Ensure supports are being implemented in the classroom

✨ Coaching Options
Initial Consultation: $200
Ongoing Coaching: $185/hour
Advocacy Package: $750 for 5 hours of support

You don’t have to navigate the system alone—support is available.

Parenting a teenager can feel like riding a wave—one moment everything is calm, and the next emotions are crashing in from every direction.

When teens experience intense emotions, our instinct is often to fix, argue, or react. But one of the most powerful tools we have as parents is learning how to regulate ourselves first.

Join us for Riding the Wave: Parenting Teens with Big Emotions, a practical, skills-based workshop grounded in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). You'll learn strategies to:
• Stay calm during emotional moments
• Respond instead of react
• Strengthen connection with your teen
• Support healthy emotional regulation at home

Children often borrow our nervous systems before they learn to regulate their own.

That doesn't mean parents need to stay calm all the time.

It means repairing, modeling healthy coping, and taking care of yourself matter just as much.

A regulated adult isn't perfect.
They're present.

Children and teens don't always have the words to explain what's happening inside.

Sometimes stress shows up as:

• bigger emotions
• withdrawal
• perfectionism
• behavior changes
• physical complaints

Therapy provides a safe space to build coping skills, confidence, emotional awareness, and resilience.

Longer days, disrupted routines, vacations, family gatherings, changing schedules—

Even positive transitions can affect the nervous system.

If summer feels harder than expected, you’re not alone.

Trauma often involves loss of choice.

Healing often involves rebuilding it.

Small choices matter:

What feels safe
What pace works
When to pause
When to continue

Choice is part of healing.
