Be quick to listen. Slow to speak. Slow to anger.

What a revolutionary way to live.

I closed my class with this scripture today, because it’s so relevant to my personal life. I’ve started to study hyperreactivity, within myself and within evidence based literature.

Emotional hyperreactivity is when a person experiences emotional reactions that are out of proportion to the situation they are in. It is a symptom of C-PTSD and I never heard of it until I started seeing a black, female general practitioner.

Emotional hyperreactivity can be unlearned in multiple ways but the path starts with noticing. Awareness is only possible in silence when an individual is willing to listen.

Be quick to listen. Slow to speak. Slow to anger. Absolute wisdom.

Refusing to dim my light is working out pretty well.

I love being in school. I don’t have to pretend that I’m an expert. I can just learn and share what I’m learning with others 🥰🥰

Right now, I’m in SOWK 6252 Mental Health Assessment. Learning about anxiety and different treatment methods.

I’ve actually been reading a lot of Dr. Claire Weekes lately. She is considered by some to be a pioneer in the field of mental health, specifically anxiety. Her methods are pretty dated and there’s plenty of room for criticism. But we don’t have to throw the baby out with the bathwater, ya know?

The concept of acceptance is a cornerstone for Dr. Weekes and it’s really blowing my mind. Recognizing that the acceptance of one’s anxiety is not the same as submitting to one’s anxiety. She’s one of the first professionals to acknowledge nervous system sensitization.

She writes “Be prepared to accept it and live with it for the time being. Accept it as something that will be with you for some time yet - in fact while you recover -but something that will eventually leave you if you are prepared to let time pass…” Hope and Help for Your Nerves (End Anxiety Now) by Dr. Clarie Weekes

This is a pretty nuanced way to define acceptance.
