That version of you that goes cold, goes quiet, or goes to war? That's not your personality. That's a coping mode. 🧡

In schema therapy, coping modes are the automatic self-protection states we shift into when an old wound gets touched. They worked once. They cost us now.

Swipe for 5 signs you're in a mode and not your true self β€” and remember: the goal is never to shame the mode. It's to thank it for its service and let your healthy adult self take the wheel.

Which one do you recognize first β€” the detacher, the fighter, or the pleaser?

A red flag isn't a test of your patience. It's information.

If you keep ending up with a different partner and the same ending, the common thread isn't bad luck. It's a pattern β€” one your earliest experiences taught you to recognize as "home," even when home didn't feel safe.

The Red Flag Resetβ„’ is built on one premise: you can't stop choosing the pattern until you can see it. And once you can see it, everything changes.

What's one red flag you ignored early that made complete sense later?

Not everyone is a narcissist.

The rise of self-help content has put clinical language in everyone's vocabulary β€” but there's often a real gap between usage and understanding. Overusing labels like "narcissist," "gaslighting," and "trauma bond" cuts both ways: it pathologizes ordinary human selfishness, and it waters down the language we need for naming true abuse.

On the blog, we break down what narcissistic patterns actually look like, why a single selfish act doesn't define someone, and how to respond to hurtful behavior with clarity instead of labels.

The other day, I wrote a letter to the estranged parent. This is the other one.

There's an argument happening about whether adult children have been talked into cutting off their parents. I've sat with too many people who tried everything else first to believe that's how anyone arrives here.

And there's a second chorus telling you that you owe nobody anything and should feel great about it β€” which doesn't match the Tuesday afternoons either.

So: ten things. Not all of them are yours to do, and one of them is permission to decide it stays closed.

Full letter here. Both letters are linked to each other; neither is arguing with the other. https://www.staffordgroupnc.com/blog/open-letter-adult-child-no-contact

Betrayal trauma isn't like other trauma β€” because the person who hurt you is the person you would have turned to for comfort. 🧡

If you've experienced infidelity or deception in a committed relationship, the intrusive thoughts, the timeline obsession, the waves of grief and rage β€” none of that means you're broken. It means you sustained an attachment injury, and your mind and body are responding exactly the way attachment injuries work.

Swipe through to understand why it hits the way it does β€” and why recovery is absolutely possible, whatever you decide about the relationship itself.

There's an argument happening right now about whether adult children are cutting off their parents too easily. Almost none of it is addressed to the parent sitting alone with a blocked number.

So I wrote her a letter. And I counted ten things on my fingers β€” the ten I've watched have to become true before repair is actually possible.

Not one of them is an apology technique.

Full letter here: staffordgroupnc.com/blog. There's a companion letter to the adult child coming next week; they were written as a pair.

The needs that went unmet in childhood don't disappear. They go looking.

For safety. For validation. For someone who finally sees you. And sometimes they go looking in exactly the wrong places β€” toward partners who feel familiar because they echo the original wound.

This is the heart of schema therapy: the patterns that hurt you most as an adult usually began as adaptations that protected you as a child. The work isn't to shame the pattern. It's to finally meet the need.

What felt "familiar" in a past relationship that you later realized wasn't good for you?
