MYTH: Insulin resistance only happens to overweight people. TRUTH: It can develop in lean and normal-weight people too, hiding for years while fasting glucose and A1c look “normal.” Extra insulin may hold glucose down. Blood sugar is the smoke. Insulin is the fire.

You can't treat what you don't measure.

It isn’t always about eating a “heavy” carbohydrate meal. When insulin resistance reduces muscle glucose uptake, even a moderate amount of carbohydrate may exceed what the body can comfortably handle, causing glucose and insulin to rise.

Ask a qualified clinician about fasting glucose WITH fasting insulin, glucose-to-insulin ratio/HOMA-IR, A1c, and triglyceride-to-HDL ratio. Where clinically appropriate, discuss Biospec Glucose-IR, Biospec High Dose Fish Oil, and Fibro-Ease.

Tired after a light meal? Losing focus every afternoon? Craving sugar, stubborn belly weight, or energy crashes?

Five silent signs of metabolism under strain, even when fasting glucose looks "normal." Insulin resistance can contribute to fatigue, brain fog, chronic pain, and difficulty changing body composition. Not a personal failure.

Wednesday checklist:
1. Tired after meals
2. Afternoon brain fog
3. Sugar or carb cravings
4. Stubborn belly weight
5. Energy crashes

MYTH: Normal fasting glucose means metabolism is fine.
TRUTH: Fasting glucose is one snapshot. Extra insulin can keep it normal while insulin resistance hides for years.

Blood sugar is the smoke. Insulin is the fire. You can't treat what you don't measure.

It isn't always about eating a "heavy" carbohydrate meal. When insulin resistance reduces muscle glucose uptake, even a moderate amount of carbohydrate may exceed what the body can comfortably handle, causing glucose and insulin to rise.

Ask a qualified clinician about fasting glucose WITH fasting insulin, a glucose-to-insulin ratio or HOMA-IR, hemoglobin A1c, and the triglyceride-to-HDL ratio. Diet and lifestyle come first; where appropriate, Biospec Glucose-IR, High Dose Fish Oil, and Fibro-Ease may be discussed.

Is Your Body Stuck in the Mitochondrial Gray Zone? How to Restore Your Energy and Health

09/27/2026

Autoimmune disease is on the rise. So is insulin resistance. And in clinical practice, I often see them run together..

Forty years in functional medicine has taught me that the body does not divide neatly into specialties. The same chronic inflammation that drives metabolic dysfunction is the same inflammation that fuels an autoimmune process. Elevated blood sugar, high insulin, poor sleep, digestive problems, environmental exposures: they all feed the same fire. And if you’re genetically predisposed to autoimmunity this environment can push that to fruition.

The question then is not which drug covers this symptom. The question is: what is driving the fire?

Two people can carry the same genetic risk and end up in completely different places. Because Genetics only loads the gun, but Environment pulls the trigger.

Your symptoms are not random. Your body can signal with a positive ANA panel, often for years before a diagnosis has a name. This provides a window of opportunity to make vital lifestyle changes before it’s too late.

You cannot treat what you don't measure.

Fatigue. Aching joints. Brain fog. Digestive problems. Headaches. Poor sleep. Weight gain.

And your labs keep coming back “normal.” Has a doctor checked your ANA panel?

MYTH: A positive ANA means nothing unless autoimmune disease is already present.
TRUTH: A positive ANA is not an autoimmune diagnosis, but it can be significant. It may indicate that something is happening in the body before autoimmune disease presents, especially with a family history.

In one landmark study, blood samples collected years earlier showed that some people who later developed lupus already had autoantibodies, sometimes up to a decade before diagnosis. Their immune systems were signaling before the disease had a name.

That is why the full pattern matters: symptoms, inflammation, insulin resistance, family history, and appropriate testing. Genetics loads the gun; environment pulls the trigger.

Do not stop at glucose. Blood sugar can look normal while the pancreas produces extra insulin to keep it there. Blood sugar is the smoke. Insulin is the fire.

Ask a qualified clinician whether ANA, hs-CRP, ESR, fibrinogen, fasting glucose with fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, A1c, triglycerides, HDL, and the triglyceride-to-HDL ratio belong in your evaluation. No single test tells the whole story.

Never change medication without medical guidance.

Normal glucose, but still tired, hungry, foggy, or gaining weight? A “healthy” carb is not healthy for every body.

The reason your glucose stays within normal is because your pancreas is pumping out extra insulin to drive blood glucose levels every time you eat a carb meal. But that comes with the cost.

It isn’t always about eating a “heavy” carbohydrate meal. When insulin resistance reduces muscle glucose uptake, even a moderate amount of carbohydrate may exceed what the body can comfortably handle, causing glucose and insulin to rise.

You can’t treat what you don’t measure.

Ask a qualified clinician about fasting glucose WITH fasting insulin, glucose-to-insulin ratio or HOMA-IR, hemoglobin A1c, and triglyceride-to-HDL ratio. When clinically appropriate, discuss low-carb diet as specific supplements that may assist you, Biospec Glucose-IR, Mito-Detox III, Biospec High Dose Fish Oil, and Fibro-Ease.

With 40 years in functional medicine, I provide 100% virtual root-cause care.

Why I Use BioSpec for My Family and My Patients

After more than 40 years in clinical practice, I’ve become pretty skeptical of the supplement industry. There are thousands of products, endless marketing claims, and every few months another “miracle” ingredient takes over social media.

That’s not how I choose nutritional supplements for my patients—and it’s certainly not how I choose them for my own family.

I serve as Chief Science Officer for BioSpec Nutritionals because their philosophy closely matches the way I practice functional medicine.

Physiology before trends. A formula should be designed around how the human body actually works—not around whatever ingredient happens to be popular this month.

Clinically meaningful doses. Putting an impressive ingredient on a label means very little if there isn’t enough of it to matter. I want ingredients, doses, and combinations supported by the best available research.

Quality must be verified. Identity, potency, purity, heavy metals, and label claims matter. Trust is important—but testing is better.

And formulas should evolve as science evolves. I don’t believe a nutritional formula should remain frozen in time simply because it has been selling for 20 years. When better evidence, better ingredients, or better formulation strategies become available, we should be willing to improve.

Ultimately, I use a very simple test:

Would I give this to my own wife, children, grandchildren, or the patients who have trusted me with their health?

If the answer isn’t yes, I don’t want to recommend it.

That is why I use BioSpec Nutritionals in my own life and in my clinical practice—and why I wanted to share this short video explaining The BioSpec Difference.

Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease only a low-thyroid problem? No, it is much more, it is the red warning light where investigation begins.

Recent research shows that oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are central to Hashimoto’s autoimmune disease. They are also primary drivers of chronic disease. As in all autoimmune disorders, Genetics loads the gun; diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposures pull the trigger. This is not blame: it means contributors can be identified and removed.

REMOVE added sugar and ultra-processed foods, not merely reduce them. Never change medication without medical guidance.

TSH alone is not enough, free T4, free T3 (the most active form), Hashimoto’s antibodies, fasting insulin, glucose-to-insulin ratio or HOMA-IR, A1c, and triglyceride-to-HDL ratio, are all needed to understand the pathophysiology. You can’t treat what you don’t measure.

See Hashimoto‘s video above, and read my full article on Hashimoto’s on my website under Health living section.
