💆‍♀️ HELP US CHOOSE OUR NEXT MODALITY! 💆‍♂️

We’re always looking for ways to expand our knowledge and bring new techniques to the table at Bluegrass Bodyworks. So we want to know…

What would YOU like to see us learn next? 👀👇

🥇 Thai Massage & Stretching
Often called “assisted yoga,” Thai massage combines compression, rhythmic movement, joint mobilization, and assisted stretching. It’s performed clothed and can be especially great for mobility and creating a sense of spaciousness throughout the body.

🎋 Bamboo Massage
A unique technique using warmed or room-temperature bamboo tools to roll, compress, and massage the muscles. The bamboo allows for deeper, broader pressure while still creating a flowing, relaxing experience.

🌿 Ayurvedic Massage
Rooted in the traditional wellness practices of Ayurveda, this style often incorporates warm oils, rhythmic strokes, and intentional techniques designed to promote relaxation and a sense of balance.

🥋 Tui Na
A traditional Chinese therapeutic bodywork technique that uses kneading, rolling, pressing, brushing, and acupressure-like techniques along the body. It can be more targeted and therapeutic than a typical relaxation massage.

SO… WHAT SHOULD WE LEARN?! 🤔

💬 Your Massage Therapist Needs Feedback

One of the most important things you can do during a massage is communicate with your therapist.

And please know this:

We genuinely will not have our feelings hurt. ❤️

Too much pressure? Tell us.
Not enough pressure? Tell us.
Something feels uncomfortable? Tell us.
Want us to spend more time on your shoulders and less on your legs? Tell us.
Need a different position, another pillow, more warmth, less conversation, or a little more quiet?

Tell us.

We aren’t going to think you’re difficult. We aren’t going to be offended. And you don’t have to worry about hurting our feelings.

In fact, we’d much rather know what you need than have you lie there quietly enduring something you don’t enjoy.

Your massage isn’t a performance you’re supposed to “get through.”

This time is for YOU.

Our job is to listen, adapt, and create a treatment that feels appropriate for your body and your goals that day.

And sometimes what your body needs today is completely different from what it needed last time. That’s okay, too.

So please speak up.

You are not being picky.
You are not being difficult.
You are helping us take better care of you.

Communication is part of good bodywork. 💆‍♀️🌿

🧠 Your Posture Isn’t “Bad”

We hear it all the time:

“I have terrible posture.”

But here’s the anatomical reality: your body isn’t designed to hold one “perfect” position all day.

Your spine has natural curves—cervical and lumbar lordosis with thoracic kyphosis—and those curves constantly adapt to what you’re doing.

When you sit at a desk, for example, several things can happen:

➡️ Your head may translate forward, increasing the demand on the cervical extensor muscles.
➡️ Your thoracic spine may move into greater flexion.
➡️ Your scapulae change position relative to your rib cage.
➡️ Your hip flexors remain in a shortened position.
➡️ Your gluteal muscles are relatively inactive compared with standing or walking.
➡️ Muscles surrounding the spine and pelvis continuously make small adjustments to keep you upright.

None of those things automatically mean you’ve developed “bad posture.”

The bigger problem?

Staying there.

Your musculoskeletal system is incredibly adaptable. It responds to the positions, loads, and movements you give it repeatedly.

If you spend 8 hours sitting, your body becomes very good at sitting.

If you spend 8 hours standing, your body adapts to standing.

If you move frequently through different ranges of motion, your body gets more opportunities to experience—and maintain—movement variability.

So instead of obsessing over whether your shoulders are perfectly back or your spine is perfectly straight:

Change positions. Move your spine. Take walking breaks. Reach overhead. Rotate. Squat. Stretch. Breathe.

Your body doesn’t need perfect posture.

It needs movement. 💆‍♀️

And if persistent pain is present, posture is only one piece of the puzzle. Pain can involve many factors beyond alignment alone.

I asked Dr. Lisa to turn my brain off… and apparently she took that personally. 😂

Story time:

Lately, I’ve been dealing with a massive amount of anxiety. My brain has basically been running 47 tabs at once, and I was ready for somebody to just hit the damn “shut down” button.

Thankfully, I’m lucky enough to be able to trade services with Dr. Lisa, our acupuncturist. So I told her, “Can you just… turn my brain off?”

I also had a couple of my usual trouble spots going on — golfers elbow, plus a whole lot of tension hanging out in my neck and back. She worked on those with some of her typical tendon and musculoskeletal treatments.

But then she added some needles in my ears and around my face/scalp.

And y’all…

Within about FIVE MINUTES, I was snoring. 😂

Like, full-on asleep.

She actually turned my brain off.

I woke up thinking, “Well, damn. That worked.”

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Insert late-night TV salesman voice here. 😂

A couple of days later, I noticed something else…

I had almost ZERO desire for the sweets sitting in my house.

Now, this was weird because normally if there is a cookie in my house, my brain considers it a personal challenge.

So I texted Dr. Lisa:

“Did you DO something for cravings?!?”

She went back through her notes and, sure enough, the treatment she used can also have an effect on cravings and addictive behaviors.

Her response was basically, “If it works for a while, I’ll do it on myself!” 😂

Honestly, fair.

Here we are a couple of weeks later, and my cravings are still dramatically lower than usual.

I went in asking her to quiet the anxiety factory upstairs…

…and somehow left with a quieter brain AND apparently less interest in raiding the snack cabinet.

Acupuncture: 1
My chaotic nervous system: 0

So if you’ve been thinking about trying acupuncture, go see Dr. Lisa.

And maybe tell her to “turn your brain off.” 😂

You never know what else might come along for the ride!

Obviously, everyone responds differently, but I just had to share my very unexpected experience because… WHAT?! 😂
