The mind is always trying to move us away from pain into pleasure.

Drugs and alcohol may be used to numb a person’s feelings and thoughts or give them a sense of being up rather than being down. So they can ‘feel’ more like the authentic version of themselves.
Food may be used to comfort uncomfortable emotions and even as something to do when bored.

I have yet to meet someone with addiction issues that believes that they are enough—self-critical looping thoughts paving the way to their beliefs.

Preparing for change: 5 keys to addiction recovery!

- Remind yourself of the reasons you want to change.
- Think about your past attempts at recovery, if any. What worked? What didn’t?
- Set specific, measurable goals, such as a start date or limits on your drug use.
- Remove reminders of your addiction from your home, workplace, and other places you frequent.
- Tell friends and family that you’re committing to recovery, and ask for their support.

On our journey to recovery, there will be beautiful days when we will feel comfortable and successful. We have overcome many problems. But it is also essential that we accept the terrible days that we may go through and know that they do not rotate and that their incidence will decrease over time. It's there to get us to understand our weaknesses and the things we need to work on.
