Part 3 of our Be Tech Wise series - Preschool edition!

Did you know ⁉️
Studies have found that higher screen use in preschoolers may limit growth and development in areas of the brain responsible for attention, memory, and social skills.

The preschool years are an exciting time when children begin making friends, expressing their ideas, asking questions, and developing new skills. Real-world experiences help build the foundation for communication and learning.

✨ What helps preschoolers learn and grow?
• Emotional reassurance and support
• Pretend play and imaginative activities
• Playing with other children and practicing social skills
• Daily routines and responsibilities
• Talking, singing, and reading together

✨ Why less screen time helps preschoolers thrive:
• Preschoolers learn best through hands-on experiences and real-life interactions
• Too much screen time can replace opportunities for talking, playing, and exploring
• Limited screen time helps children develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and emotional resilience
• Face-to-face interactions support language development and social growth

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
• Ages 2–5 years: Limit screen time to no more than 1 hour per day of high-quality programming
• When possible, watch with your child and talk about what you’re seeing together

✨ Simple ways to get started:
📚 Read together every day
🏠 Involve your preschooler in household tasks like cooking, cleaning, and caring for pets
📱 Set clear and consistent screen-time boundaries
👀 Model healthy screen habits and make time for conversations throughout the day

Part 2 of our Be Tech Wise series! This week we’re focusing on toddlers and how screen time can impact communication development!

Did you know ⁉️
Screens can limit imagination by providing only a set number of choices, while a child’s imagination has endless possibilities.

✨ What helps toddlers grow their communication skills?
• Everyday conversations during meals, errands, and play
• Pretend play and imaginative activities
• Reading books and talking about the pictures
• Giving them time to answer questions and express ideas

✨ Why less screen time helps toddlers thrive:
• Toddlers learn best through hands-on experiences and real-life interactions
• Too much screen time can replace opportunities for talking, playing, and exploring
• Screen-free play helps build creativity, problem-solving, and social skills

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
• 18–24 months: If introducing screens, choose high-quality programming and watch together
• 2–5 years: Limit screen time to about 1 hour per day of high-quality programming and co-view whenever possible

Remember! ⬇️
While no screen time is generally better for toddlers, what matters most is creating a healthy balance that works for your family. 💙

Simple ways to get started:
📺 Keep the TV off during playtime
🧸 Choose simple toys like blocks, puzzles, dolls, cars, and household items
👀 Be present during interactions and put devices away during conversations

Part 1 of our Be Tech Wise series: Babies! 👶 📱

Did you know? ⬇️
80% of brain development occurs in the first three years of life?

Every conversation, song, story, and play moment helps build your baby’s brain and communication skills!

🗣️What helps babies learn language?
• Hearing familiar voices talk throughout the day
• Reading together daily
• Responding to their baby sounds, smiles, and gestures
• Following their interests and talking about what they’re looking at

📱🚫Why does screen-free time matter with babies?
• Parents tend to talk less when using screens, which means fewer opportunities for babies to hear and learn language.
• Looking at a device can make it easier to miss your baby’s cues, smiles, and attempts to communicate.
• Too much screen time may make it harder for babies to develop self-soothing skills.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends zero screen time for babies before 18 months. AAP says that it’s okay to use devices just for video chatting with loved ones.

✅ Simple ways to get started:
• Create screen-free spaces (such as nursery)
• Keep mealtimes screen-free
• Put devices away during playtime
• Talk with family members about healthy screen habits

This is a time to raise awareness about speech and language disorders, which are among the most common disabilities that school-aged children experience. Left unaddressed, speech and language disorders can affect a child’s academic and social success.

Speech-language pathologists work with children who have difficulties in the following areas:
· Speech sounds—A child may substitute one sound for another, leave sounds out, add sounds, or change a sound. It may be hard for others to understand them.

· Spoken and written language—A child may have trouble understanding what others are communicating to them and may have problems explaining what they are thinking or feeling. They may also have difficulty with reading and writing.

· Stuttering (fluency)—A child may get stuck on certain sounds or words. They also may have tension or negative feelings about talking. This tension can get in the way of how they talk to others.

· Cognition—A child may have problems with long- or short-term memory, attention, problem solving, or organization.

· Social communication—A child may have difficulty understanding how others feel or following the rules of conversation, such as knowing how to take turns.

· Voice—A child may lose their voice frequently or use a hoarse or breathy voice. They may also speak with strain or effort.

· Augmentative and alternative communication—A child may need to find other ways to communicate besides talking, such as using a picture board or a speech-generating device.

· Feeding and swallowing—Some children experience problems with feeding and swallowing. Speech-language pathologists can help children eat and drink safely.

Whether or not your child has a speech, language, and/or swallowing disorder, it’s important for everyone to reflect on how we can be respectful and supportive to those who do. Here at Morgan Hill Speech we encourage your child to give people time to get their message out, to focus on what a person is saying rather than how they’re saying it, and to never bully someone for how they communicate.
