Mammalian milk is species specific. Human babies have the LARGEST brains at birth of all mammals (sorry pelvis). Larger brains need higher amounts of lactose (which ensures a supply of galactocerebrosides which are a major component of brain growth). Human milk contains the highest amount of lactose of ALL mammals - and human milk is the sweetest of all mammalian milks (tell the truth, did ya try it?)

The average amount of lactose in different mammals is:
·       7% in human milk and donkey milk
·       6.5% in red kangaroo and horse
·       4-5% in cow, zebu, yak, water buffalo, goat, sheep

You’re welcome for this delicious poolside sweet lactose drink your sippin on Miss Winnie!

Let’s talk breastmilk protein! 💪

The whey to casein ratio in human milk varies according to the stage of lactation:
·       Colostrum 90:10 (Some references say 80:10, others 90:10 - just recall it is a lot to a little)
·       Mature human milk 60:40
·       Late lactation 50:50
The whey to casein ratio in cow-milk based infant formula (if no additional whey is added) is constant at 20:80.
Whey is much easier (or dare I say “whey easier”😎) to digest than casein. Human milk (which has more whey than casein) has a gastric-emptying time of about 48 minutes, compared to 76 minutes for infant formula (which has more casein than whey).

Interesting stuff!

A little personal note on why supporting postpartum women is so important to me…

When I was postpartum with my first baby (Mac),I was suffering from postpartum anxiety and postpartum OCD. I went untreated for 3 months. The thoughts/feelings I was experiencing were enough to get in my way in my daily life. I honestly thought what I was feeling was “normal”. It wasn’t until I went to a support group in Pittsburgh, PA that I realized what I was going through was far from “normal”. With the encouragement of my family, the leader of the group and the other moms, I got help. With treatment, things really turned around for me.

I went into my second pregnancy armed with mental health knowledge and prepared to get help immediately if needed. I am happy to report I did not experience any postpartum mental health disorders. 🙏🏻

Looking back, I feel bad for that postpartum mama struggling and thank god for the support group (and of course my family and friends). Postpartum is such a vulnerable time full of roller coaster hormones, exhaustion, pressure and figuring out a new identity (oh, and keeping a human who you love more than life itself alive).

I am truly passionate about supporting all postpartum women. If you are struggling, reach out to someone (you can even message me). If you aren’t, check on your mama friends. Oh, and spread the word about the .club 😉💜
