For decades, I have advocated for Head Start because every child deserves a strong start in life. Today, I stand with the more than 100 civil rights and child advocacy organizations opposing efforts to dismantle the program from within.

Head Start is more than preschool. It supports healthy babies, working parents, and stronger families. You don't build a stronger nation by starving its children of opportunity.

Protect Head Start.

The Tiny Joy Project

That “annoying habit” might actually be self-regulation.

Tapping a foot. Twirling hair. Humming. Repeating the same song. Rocking. Doodling. Chewing a pen. Playing with hoodie strings. Rubbing a soft fabric. Bouncing a knee. Pacing while thinking.

These things are often dismissed as fidgeting, restlessness or “not sitting still”… but for many people, especially autistic people and people with ADHD, stimming can help the brain and body cope.

It can help with focus.
It can help release stress.
It can help manage big emotions.
It can help process sensory overload.
It can help someone feel grounded and safe.

Not every stim looks the same, and not every stim is obvious. Some are loud, some are quiet, some are so everyday we barely notice them.

Instead of asking, “Why are you doing that?” maybe we can start asking, “Is this helping you?”

Because understanding stimming isn’t about stopping people from being themselves. It’s about replacing shame with support.

✨Disney Week was full of magic, laughter, and unforgettable memories at the clinic! From our favorite Disney-inspired activities to themed games, crafts, and dress-up days, our therapists and kiddos had so much fun bringing a little Disney magic into therapy.

While we were having fun, our kids were also building communication, motor, sensory, and social skills through engaging, play-based activities designed just for them. Every smile, every accomplishment, and every magical moment made this week one to remember! 💙✨

Take a look at some of our favorite moments from Disney Week! Which Disney character would you bring to therapy? 🌟

This week, we are excited for animal/safari week! We hope you will join us for some wild fun! ✨

Happy National Disability Independence Day!

July 26 marks the anniversary of the passing of the historic Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. Thanks to the ADA, the law protects the rights of people with disabilities and makes sure they have equal access to education, employment, health care, transportation, public spaces, and more.

In West Virginia, we have Disability Rights of WV as our Protection and Advocacy (P&A) agency to help protect the rights of West Virginians with disabilities. Together with the WV Developmental Disability Council and the WVU CED, these organizations make up the WV Developmental Disabilities Network.

You can learn more about how the WV DD Network agencies work together in this article published in the Developmental Disabilities Network Journal earlier this year: https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/ddnj/vol5/iss2/6/

As therapy providers, we are specialists in development, motor skills, visual processing, self-awareness, spatial concepts, kinesiology, sensory processing, regulation, and all of the other areas that really make a big difference in a child’s functional ability to write.

There are many skills that kids need for handwriting!

Handwriting is SO much more than crossing t’s and dotting i’s.

Did you know handwriting development starts at birth. Yep, it’s true! When babies are swaddled, reach for mama’s face, and crawl, they are developing the postural stability and visual motor skills needed waaaaay down the road when they write their ABCs.
