Join us this June in honoring the strength of cancer survivors and the loved ones who support them every step of the way. 💙💛

Every cancer journey is unique, and every survivor story deserves to be honored. At WVU Cancer Institute, we’re proud to care for patients across West Virginia and beyond — and to celebrate the milestones, big and small, along the way.

Penny Cooley credits WVU Cancer Institute’s LUCAS mobile lung cancer screening unit with helping detect her cancer early, leading to lifesaving treatment. Today, her story is a powerful reminder of how early detection can make all the difference. LUCAS is now traveling communities across the state, expanding access to lung cancer screenings for eligible West Virginians. Find out where LUCAS will be at wvucancer.org/mobilecalendar.

Exciting news from Princeton Community Hospital! 🎉

We’re proud to see expanded access to advanced cancer treatments and supportive care in southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia. These new services bring innovative care closer to home — making a meaningful difference for patients and families across our region. 💛

Read more below and join us in celebrating this important step forward for cancer care.

Today PCH announced the expansion of cancer services with the addition of three advanced treatment and supportive care technologies now available locally for patients across southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia.

The new technologies include Pluvicto™ radioligand therapy for advanced prostate cancer, THOR Photobiomodulation Therapy for supportive cancer care, and Cooling Cap Therapy designed to help reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss.

PCH is the first hospital in the region to offer all three therapies, and only the second WVU Medicine hospital to offer Cooling Cap Therapy.

“At Princeton Community Hospital, our goal is to change the health trajectory of the communities we serve by bringing advanced, high-quality care closer to home,” Bowling said. “For too long, patients in our region have had to travel hours away from their families and support systems to access the newest cancer treatments and today represents another major step forward as we build a new era of cancer care for southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia.”

Radioligand therapy is a newer class of targeted cancer treatment that delivers radiation through the bloodstream directly to cancer cells while helping limit exposure to surrounding healthy tissue. The first radioligand treatment now available at PCH is Pluvicto™, an innovative therapy used to treat advanced prostate cancer.

PCH also introduced THOR Photobiomodulation Therapy, an advanced light therapy designed to help reduce painful side effects experienced during radiation and chemotherapy treatment for head and neck cancers. Patients can develop severe mouth sores, inflammation, and discomfort that can make eating, drinking, and speaking difficult during treatment.

In addition, PCH is now offering Cooling Cap Therapy for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The treatment works by cooling the scalp during chemotherapy infusions, which may help reduce hair loss for some patients receiving certain cancer drugs.

The additions reflect continued momentum and investment in cancer services at PCH, including a future comprehensive cancer center currently under construction on the hospital campus.

“These technologies are more than new equipment or treatment names,” Bowling said. “They represent hope, improved quality of life, and expanded access to advanced cancer care for the people of this region.”

This Skin Cancer Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that skin cancer is both common and often preventable — and when caught early, highly treatable.

At the WVU Cancer Institute, patients have access to expert care from Vlad Codrea, MD, PhD, a specialist in Mohs micrographic surgery. This precise, outpatient procedure allows for the careful removal of skin cancer while sparing healthy tissue — helping patients heal faster and with confidence.

Whether you’ve noticed a change in your skin or simply want peace of mind, getting checked is a powerful step toward protecting your health.
