I’m looking for a preschool-aged child with multiple speech sound errors who may be difficult to understand at times.

I would like to complete a speech sound evaluation that would be audio and/or video recorded for use with my graduate speech sound disorders class. My students are learning transcription, standardized testing, diagnosis, and development of age-appropriate treatment goals.

The family will receive the results of the evaluation and recommendations.

Maybe the pediatricians get it. 👏

I have wondered for YEARS why the medical community isn’t a bigger part of early literacy identification.

We screen little kids for all kinds of things during those preschool well visits. So why wouldn’t we also pay attention to the early language and literacy skills that can tell us a child may need additional support BEFORE they walk through the doors of kindergarten?

That’s exactly what Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Ohio is doing. Kids ages 3–5 are receiving literacy screenings during routine pediatric visits, giving families information and an opportunity to intervene early.

And I love THIS is the part:

“That’s why we’re doing this now, because at the age of 3 … you have all the time in the world.”

YES. 👏 YOU. 👏 DO.

You don’t have to wait for a child to fail.
You don’t have to wait until third grade.
You don’t have to wait until a child is two years behind.
You don’t even have to wait until they can read to notice that something may be getting in the way.

Screen. Identify concerns. Give parents information. Connect kids with support.

Imagine if comprehensive screening like this spread like wildfire across the country. Imagine parents walking into kindergarten already armed with information about their child and ready to advocate for the instruction and intervention they need.

And after some of the conversations we’ve had this week about “waiting” to evaluate young children, perhaps a few school psychologists could take a cue from the pediatricians in Ohio. 😏

Early identification doesn’t hurt kids.

Waiting can.
