"Many times people will get tired of what they have been putting up with in a relationship, and finally get some boundaries. Then their first real exercise of boundaries will be to end the relationship. They will often say that this is an exercise in boundaries, but in reality it is a cop-out." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 195) If we are to learn boundaries we need to stay in relationships and develop the skills of exercising them. "A person with true boundaries would go back in to the relationship and take stands on the individual problems that come up with the day-to-day relationship."(page 195) This is the effective ways to give change a chance within ourselves and the relationship.

When we have problem people in our lives, in order to know whether to repair or replace this relationship, we need what is called an intervention. "When someone difficult is not seeing that he or she has a problem, others are brought in to help in the confrontation." (Safe people by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend. We are to gather others for strength, to go with us to lovingly confront the problem person. An intervention must always be done with love and humility. If we have any holier than others attitude or revenge in mind, then stop. This is not helpful confrontation. Having a few others with us during a confrontation helps guide and direct our words and actions to be helpful. "Their input and love for the person can mitigate against pride, hurt, and irrational behavior, as well as our own inexperience." (Safe people by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 193.

The fears that keep us in difficult relationships, these are the weaknesses within ourselves that need to be dealt with first. If we desire good relationships, "We first have to face the ways that we are part of the problem before we can become a redemptive agent in the life of someone else." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 192) Maybe you have a fear of being alone or having conflict. These are just the things that we need to face in order to develop healthy actions in relationships. "In order to have safe people, we must first become safe people ourselves." If you are wanting to start this process of personal change, send a message to our life coaches.

"What are we to do? When are we to try to reconcile and work things out, and when are we to count the relationship as a loss and move on? When we are thinking about this question, it is helpful to think of how God handled the problem of difficult relationships. Looking at him as our model, we find that God (1) starts from a loved position." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 190) We need to answer a heart position question of whether we are approaching a difficult relationship from a position of already being loved. "If we need any one person in order to survive, we will not be able to resolve the relationship. Our dependency keeps us from being ourselves and doing the right thing. In order to work out a difficult relationship, we need to be secure in our other relationships. Our support system needs to be intact." We need to seek out support groups for connection and strengthening. Then we will be able to confront areas in a difficult relationship.

The second skill of forgiveness is to learn to give it. The key is in confessing with a heart full of grace. Grace is having kindness for others that is undeserved. "Here's some things to do with your safe people that will help you in this vital character issue: Confess the hurst you've cause others. Confess the hurts you've received from them. Use the relationships to feel your negative emotions about the injury, such as hurt, sadness, anger, and shame. Take in the character elements from your safe people that you needed from those who hurt you. Remember, if you outgrow your need for someone, they lose power to hurt you. Process your wish for revenge and instant justice. Learn to grieve those wishes and accept the realities." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 184)

If you have ever had someone offer forgiveness to you, then you have found a place to call home. We can learn these skills by finding a relationship with a safe person. They are experts of the skills of forgiveness. First, we need to learn to receive forgiveness. "Receiving forgiveness allows us to integrate judged and condemned parts of ourselves. As we experience someone outside who accepts us as we are, we begin to accept the realities of who we are also. Here are the skills of receiving forgiveness:
Learn to apologize. Learn to feel empathy for the pain you cause others, rather than guilt. Learn to admit your faults without rationalizing or making excuses. Learn to ask, 'Will you forgive me for hurting you?' Learn to take in forgiveness without attempting to make up for your fault or pay for your trespass. Learn to accept the love that knows we are frail and loves us still." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 183). Just remember that we will never be perfect with the skills of forgiveness, but we can learn to practice them more often.

When we discern another person before entering into a relationship, we need to make sure that both parties are safe people. "Safe people are a very forgiving people. They have given up on the idealistic demand that they, or anyone else, will be perfect in this life. They know that they continually need divine and human 'debt-cancellations' and they expect failure and disappointment from those they love." We can all learn how to be more this way in our relationship with others. Otherwise, bitterness and resentment will take up residence in our hearts and minds towards others. We cannot be called a safe person with these inside of us. We can all learn how to be a safe person through the skills of forgiveness. Our life coaching can offer space to learn and develop these much-needed safe person traits. Give one a call today.

"Safe people don't need to use a gr***de when a whisper or two will suffice." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 181) We have all experienced others telling us things that hurt and are not true about ourselves. This is very easy for someone who is not a safe person. "Safe people just aren't wired like that." We can discover many truths from a safe person's whisper. Truths such as:
"how people feel when you withdraw from them or how it hurts them when you don't respect their boundaries." Also, "how your imperfections draw them closer. Value and cherish these truths from your safe people."

When we ask for feedback from others, two things must be present. The first the person I ask for feedback from must be safe. The second thing is that this safe person is NOT critical but speak truth in love. So how does one go about asking for feedback from others about us. "If you will regularly ask these two questions to your safe people, and use the data, your life will flourish. Here they are:
1. What do I do that pushes you away from me?
2. What do I do that draws you toward me?
When you ask these questions, you're saying several important things to your safe people. You're telling them -
I value how you feel about me. I respect what you observe in me. I trust you with my most vulnerable parts." (Safe People by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend page 180)
