In a study of heart disease, people who consumed diet drinks every day had a greater risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Artificial sweeteners have proven to be carcinogenic in animal studies. They wreak havoc on your gut microbes, destroying beneficial bacteria and causing glucose intolerance. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Something that tastes sweet but contains zero calories may sound like the perfect cure for sugar addiction. But it’s not, and here’s why. Normally, when you eat or drink something sweet, it’s accompanied by lots of calories. But not when you consume artificial sweeteners. This confuses your brain. It senses that the taste of sugar without the accompanying calories from glucose and fructose is wrong, and it tries to correct the imbalance by making you hungrier. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Not only that, but it also confuses and slows your metabolism down, so you burn less calories every day.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Bottom line: There is no free ride. Diet drinks are not good substitutes for sugar-sweetened drinks. They still (or even more) increase cravings, weight gain, and type 2 diabetes. And they are addictive.⁣⁣

Sargento has been sued for the “No Antibiotics” label on their cheese...and this label probably doesn’t mean what you think it does.

You’d think that it means it comes from cows not given antibiotics and that antibiotics are never in their cheese. Right?

Turns out that is not what it means at all.

Sargento gets the milk for their cheese from farms who use antibiotics - and these antibiotics can end up in their cheese:

Testing done in July of last year detected the antibiotic sulfamethazine in their sliced cheddar cheese. Even worse, this antibiotic is PROHIBITED for use in dairy cows.

Dairy cows are commonly given antibiotics to treat mastitis (udder infections). Farmers are supposed to ensure the antibiotics have left their system before producing milk, but this isn’t always the case.

Even if antibiotics aren’t in their milk, the overuse of antibiotics in farm animals is creating a major problem. Those antibiotics don’t stay on the farm. They end up in waterways and contaminate our food.

This is causing antibiotic-resistant bacteria to proliferate, and pretty soon, it may be that when you get an infection, antibiotics won’t work for you. This is a very scary problem.

This is why I won’t buy dairy or meat that isn’t certified organic, and preferably, 100% pasture raised on small local farms.

Organic cows are NEVER given antibiotics. Because of how they are raised, they’re less likely to get mastitis. If they get sick, they are given antibiotics, but removed from organic production, so its milk will not be sold as organic.

Think about this when you buy ANY dairy product… milk, butter, yogurt, etc.

I eat very limited dairy products because of health and environmental reasons, as well as, for the reasons mentioned above. When I do eat dairy, I always buy organic – no exceptions. When I go out to eat at restaurants that may not use organic or local dairy products I try my best to avoid them. It’s that simple.

If you assume that the Non-GMO label is equivalent to the Organic label, you’re not alone.

It can be confusing, so I made this graphic to help.

Here’s what to remember:

Organic food is non-GMO, but non-GMO food isn’t necessarily organic.

Let’s break it down...

✔️Non-GMO Project verifies that a product doesn’t contain GMO ingredients. While that is good, it’s not the whole story about what the product contains, how it was produced, and where it came from.

✔️USDA Organic regulations prohibit any GMO ingredients in a certified organic product.

✔️Organic crops cannot be grown with synthetic pesticides. Non-GMO crops can be grown the same as conventional crops and can still be laden with toxic pesticide residue.

✔️Glyphosate (Roundup) is prohibited on organic crops. Non-GMO crops (such as non-organic wheat and non-organic oats) can be sprayed pre-harvest with Roundup. This herbicide accumulates in your body the more you are exposed to it and is linked to cancer.

✔️Organic ingredients aren’t processed with the neurotoxin hexane.

✔️Organic crops are prohibited from being fertilized with sewage sludge (biosolids) which is literally the treated waste that’s flushed down the toilet, and waste from hospitals and industry.

✔️Organic meat isn’t produced with growth-promoting drugs, like ractopamine.

✔️Organic animals aren’t fattened up with growth-promoting antibiotics. Antibiotics have been used for years, not just to fight infection, but to fatten up farm animals. The overuse of growth-promoting antibiotics is creating superbugs that could threaten the entire human population.

All of this is why the Non-GMO label is NOT enough!

Please share this and share the truth about what these labels mean. Most people don’t know this information.

Life often brings us opportunities to question our current position. Sometimes we take the opportunity to change direction. Alternatively, we look deep and decide to forge onward with even greater determination. This decision is often a product of great internal struggle. It entails digging deep and looking at all facets. If that’s where you are right now, embrace your good fortune and take your time. The answers will come.

Let's do an exercise!! Name one thing you are grateful for today (do one every day actually) and one thing you will do every day to manage your stress levels. I'll go first...
I am grateful for my health and I will either do yoga or take a walk every morning, if not both.

I hope everyone is doing well. These are very stressful times. Our minds go back and forth between panic and hoping this is just overblown. I think that finding a middle ground to maintain our sanity is very important.

1. Be vigilant in your actions. Even if you normally have a strong immune system, don't take it for granted. Wash your hands frequently; especially after contacting surfaces other people use/touch. Know what's coming into your house and clean those objects as well if they have "traveled" about. We just need to be more protective of our environment than normal.

2. Continue healthy practices. Meditation, yoga, exercise, relaxing baths, essential oils, etc. all help to maintain our level of normalcy as well as calm the system. We don't want to live in a constant state of fight or flight because it further stresses the immune system.

3. Find time to laugh and enjoy. This is so critical to our mental health and physical health. It boosts the immune system and relaxes us. We need to maintain joy and not want to kill the people we're cooped up with. We all need each other to stay healthy.

4. Eat healthy. Don't let your healthy eating practices fall by the wayside right now. Quality foods are so important to health. Don't rely on packages of cookies or chips or other highly processed foods to get through this. We need to help our bodies fight whatever this is. If this is novel and we don't have an innate immune capability, we need to give our bodies all the support they need to adapt and heal.

5. Be kind. We're all in this together and we will survive this together. And when we come out the other side, the more civil, kind and loving we have been, the more civil, kind and loving we will be towards each other when we can finally resume life as we knew it (or a better version of it).

Keep talking, keep breathing, keep checking in on one another. Times like these are scary and can lead to further mental health issues. Make sure you have someone you can talk to. Love you all!!!!!
