💙 Hearing Health & Brain Health Are Closely Connected

According to a major report from The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care, up to 45% of dementia cases may be preventable or delayed by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors. One of the largest and most impactful is untreated hearing loss.

🧠 Why hearing matters for cognitive health

When hearing loss is left untreated, the brain has to work harder to “fill in the gaps.” Over time, this can lead to:

Increased cognitive load (the brain working harder just to understand speech)
Social withdrawal and reduced communication
Decreased stimulation of key auditory and language pathways in the brain
👂 How hearing aids help support brain function

Hearing aids do more than make things louder—they help keep the brain engaged:

✔ Restore access to speech sounds and environmental cues
✔ Reduce listening effort so the brain can focus on understanding, not guessing
✔ Improve communication and social interaction
✔ Support stronger auditory stimulation to the brain’s hearing centers
✔ Help maintain cognitive engagement in daily life

📊 What research shows

Studies have found that treating hearing loss with hearing aids is associated with:

Better cognitive test performance over time
Slower rates of cognitive decline in some populations
Improved quality of life and reduced social isolation

💡 The bottom line
Hearing well helps you stay connected—and staying connected helps keep the brain active.
