I tried to share a meme here without success, so with my apologies to the OP, I will share the thought:

There are people who start planning and packing for a trip ten days before departure. With lists and procedures, they are completely ready to go three days in advance of leaving. Other people wait until 10pm the night before departure to ask, "Do you have anything to add to the laundry? I'm going to do a wash before I start packing."

These people marry each other. 🙂

Dr. John Gottman says that ALL marriages are intercultural marriages. This is what he means. And, in roughly forty years of research studying thousands of successful, happy couples, he discovered that about 2/3 of problems couples face are "perpetual problems," problems that require ongoing massaging, versus once-and-for-all fixing.

Communication isn't the whole story, but if it's not honest, forthright, approached with loving curiosity about your mate's "culturally created" habits, and healthy, it can sink all the rest.

The next time you're tempted to irritation, get curious first.
