Samaritan is proud to participate in the Community Resource Fair in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day, in partnership with the Moses Lake Farmers Market.

Stop by our table this Saturday to visit with Dr. Saad Alvi, an addiction medicine provider at Samaritan. Dr. Alvi sees patients from all walks of life with a variety of substance issues. He is passionate about education and breaking the stigma surrounding substance use disorders.

⚠️ MyChart Security Update Coming August 31, 2026

Starting August 31, 2026, patients using MyChart will be prompted to re-enroll in multi-factor authentication (MFA) the first time they sign in to their MyChart account.

This is a one-time security update to the system behind MyChart. Your MyChart account and medical information are not changing.

The first time you sign in after August 31, you’ll be prompted to set up your security verification again.

The process takes approximately 2–3 minutes. Patients will not be able to access MyChart until the security verification is completed.

Verification codes may be received by text message, email, or a third-party authenticator app.

✅ Your existing MyChart account and medical information are not changing.
✅ This update affects the secure sign-in system used by MyChart.
✅ You do not have to download an app. You may choose text message or email verification, or use an authenticator app.
✅ The MFA prompt is an expected part of this MyChart security update. Never give a verification code to someone who calls or contacts you unexpectedly.

Professionals gathered in the Clover Cafe on August 14 to celebrate the retirement of Mat Morice after 21 years as a Samaritan Professional in the Lab.

Mat was honored with his retirement gift at the Longevity Dinner during Healthcare Week in April. He is looking forward to spending more time on his hobbies, including his garden.

The second wave of Student Volunteers completed their two-week shadowing experience Friday. The 12 students spent time in clinical areas and non-clinical areas of the hospital, experiencing a variety of careers in healthcare.

Like many of the volunteers, Sadie Maiers’ time at Samaritan expanded her career options. She was thinking about becoming a radiologist, but her time in the surgical unit sparked an interest in anesthesiology. One memorable experience was seeing robotic-assisted surgery, which gave her a better understanding of surgical techniques.

Sadie’s interest in healthcare was sparked by a chemistry professor at Big Bend Community College, who made learning more fun. She loves science and how the body works and is interested in a healthcare career because she enjoys “helping people and making them feel safe,” she said.

Catalina Antunez had been planning to work more in the outpatient side of healthcare, but her time at Samaritan Hospital has made her consider more inpatient work. Her rotation in the Emergency Department was busy, and she enjoyed the constant activity.

During her time in Materials Management, she experienced the behind-the-scenes side of healthcare, and even though the department’s work involves a lot of moving around, she is more interested in patient care, following in her mother's footsteps as a CNA.

“I want to continue that because I want to help others,” she said.

For Kaeden Schulz, volunteering has given him more perspective on healthcare careers. He is planning on becoming a CRNA, but is open to other options. He especially enjoyed his time in the Imaging department because it was busy but still “chill and relaxed.” A memorable moment during that rotation was seeing an MRI of a spine that saw not only what they were looking for, but identified another issue.

His interest in healthcare came after being in and out of the hospital growing up. “My own experience makes me want to show people compassion and be able to be there for them,” he said.

🚨The Samaritan Clinic on Pioneer is currently experiencing an internet outage.

Care Today patients should visit our the Samaritan Clinic on Patton.

Family Medicine patients can be seen, but should check in at the Care Today desk.

The Samaritan student volunteers began their second week in new departments, where they shadowed Samaritan Professionals across the organization. Alexia Hernandez spent Monday in the Development and Communications department, where she used her yearbook and photography experience to interview and photograph some of her fellow volunteers.

Anisa Valdez started her week in the Respiratory Therapy department. While shadowing that team, she saw how they work with a variety of departments across the organization, including the Emergency Department and the Family Birth Center, where she got to witness a C-Section.

Her interest in a healthcare career was sparked after seeing a TikTok video about being an ultrasound technician. She has enjoyed interacting with patients and being on her feet and staying active.

Alejandro Lopez’s sister is a CNA, and she encouraged his interest in a healthcare career. His volunteer experience has helped him realize that healthcare is the career path that is right for him.

In the Emergency Department, he got to see how many different departments and Professionals are involved in a medical emergency. He also got to see a thyroid surgery and a gallbladder removal.

Alexia is planning on a career in pediatrics but enjoyed her imaging rotation and all of the different specialties in the department. “It’s interesting to experience the different ways you can see the body,” she said.

During her volunteer experience, she liked seeing the variety of healthcare careers and said that the environment fits her personality.

“I’m driven to help people,” she said. “This is a career that will make me happy.”

Samaritan student volunteers wrapped up their first week of shadowing on Friday. After rotations through two departments, two of them reflected on their experiences in an interview with Development and Communications volunteer Rocky Howard.
In speech therapy, Arely Antonio watched speech-language pathologist Rebecca Grommesh work with many patients who have had strokes that cause memory loss and speech impediments. Rebecca also demonstrated a therapy using electrodes on the throat to improve swallowing.
For Arely, seeing the patients appreciate their progress was one of her favorite parts. “Every step of the patient’s recovery is a big moment,” she said.
Frida Rincon spent her second rotation in the Med-Surg unit. As she shadowed with nurses on the unit, she saw how they cared for patients recovering from surgery. She is currently deciding between a career in nursing or in radiology and enjoyed seeing the patient care side of healthcare.
Her first rotation was handling supplies in Materials and said that both departments require Professionals to be organized.
During Rocky’s first rotation in the Emergency Department, he was able to work with his aunt Jeni Seitz, a charge nurse in the department. He was surprised to see that many of the patients had more routine medical issues and he was able to learn more about what Jeni does at work.
His most memorable experience was being able to listen through a stethoscope on healthy lungs and compare that to hearing an asthma patient who was having trouble breathing.
While Rocky is planning on becoming an ED physician, the volunteer experience has made him more open-minded to other options. “There are so many different aspects of healthcare that are really important,” he said.

The second class of student volunteers began their two-week experience at Samaritan on Monday. The 12 area students are spending time in a variety of departments learning about careers in healthcare.

Daisy Alcala is spending her first rotation with the Development and Communications department. She interviewed some of her fellow volunteers.

Volunteer Megan Truscott was shadowing Janice Liechty, a physical therapist, rounding with patients on the MedSurg unit. She said that volunteering has given her a more realistic view of the workload in the hospital, and that she has learned more about medical provider side of healthcare.

“I love to help the community and be able to give back,” she said.

A highlight of Karen Lopez’s Imaging rotation was seeing a surgery being performed. She is thinking about a career in sonography, but her experience in the department has exposed her to more options in the field, like x-ray tech and radiology.

She is currently a student at Big Bend and chose to be a Samaritan student volunteer to get more experience in healthcare and decide if it is the best career path for her.

Daisy chose to be a student volunteer to learn more about healthcare careers and to experience new things. She is also interested in becoming a sonographer, but is still exploring other options.

In Development and Communications, she was able to learn more about the Samaritan Foundation and the fundraising efforts, as well as the brand standards that the organization uses in their communications.

“It’s a good learning experience and I’m meeting new people,” she said.
