Dehydration will affect our soft tissues in four main ways which can increase our risk for soft tissue damage and delay our recovery response.
1) dehydration causes your soft tissues to become less elastic (stretchy). As your soft tissues become more stiff, they are more likely to tear instead of stretch while under load.
2) dehydration decreases the lubrication between your joints. This can cause more wear and tear on the joints.
3) dehydration can reduce blood volume making it harder for blood to properly deliver oxygen and nutrients to your muscles. This will cause your postural and stabilizing muscles to fatigue faster which then then cause instability of the joints leading to injury.
4) as blood volume decreases with dehydration, it decreases blood flow to the injured tissues. This slows recovery as it delays waste removal and cellular repair of the injured tissues.
✨ The general recommendation is to drink half your body weight in fluid ounces of water per day. ✨
When there is increased sweating (with exercise or hot environments), it is recommended to add an additional 5-10 fluid ounces of water per every 15-20 minutes that sweat production is increased.
