How Myofunctional Coaching Supports Orthodontic treatment

Braces straighten teeth — but what about the muscles that move them? 🤔

That’s where myofunctional coaching comes in.

✨ The missing piece in orthodontic treatment:
Myofunctional coaching focuses on the tongue, lips, and facial muscles — helping them function the way they were designed to. Because if the muscles don’t change, teeth can shift right back.

🦷 Why it matters during orthodontics:
• Supports proper tongue posture (resting on the palate)
• Encourages lips to stay closed at rest
• Helps eliminate habits like tongue thrust and mouth breathing
• Promotes nasal breathing for better airway support

⚠️ Without addressing function:
* Teeth may relapse after braces or expanders
* Bite issues can persist
* Airway and sleep concerns may go unresolved

💡 How it helps:
Myofunctional coaching works with orthodontic treatment to create lasting results — not just straight teeth, but a stable, healthy foundation.

💛 The goal:
Beautiful smiles that stay that way — supported by strong, functional habits for life.

If your child is in (or starting) orthodontic treatment, this is a conversation worth having.

The Link Between Tongue-Tie and Feeding Difficulties

Feeding struggles aren’t always just a phase — sometimes there’s an underlying reason. 👶🍼

One common (and often missed) cause? Tongue-tie.

✨ What is it?
A tongue-tie occurs when the tissue under the tongue restricts movement, making it harder for babies and children to use their tongue effectively.

🚩 Signs to watch for:
• Difficulty latching or staying latched
• Clicking sounds while feeding
• Gassiness or reflux-like symptoms
• Poor weight gain or long, exhausting feeds
• Pain with breastfeeding
• Messy or picky eating in older children

⚠️ Why it matters:
The tongue plays a HUGE role in feeding. When it can’t move properly, babies may struggle to create a strong, coordinated suck — leading to frustration for both baby and parent.

💡 How support can help:
• Proper assessment of oral function (not just appearance)
• Guidance before and after a release, if needed
• Myofunctional therapy to improve strength, coordination, and patterns
• Collaboration with lactation consultants and bodyworkers

💛 You’re not alone:
If feeding feels harder than it should, trust your gut. With the right support, feeding can become easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable for everyone.

Mouth breathing isn’t just a phase — it’s often a sign that the muscles of the mouth and airway aren’t working the way they should. 👶💭

This is where myofunctional therapy can make a powerful difference.

✨ What we look for:
• Open-mouth posture at rest
• Low tongue posture (not resting on the palate)
• Lip incompetence (lips don’t stay closed easily)
• Tongue thrust or messy eating patterns
• Snoring or restless sleep

⚠️ Why it matters:
When the tongue, lips, and cheeks aren’t functioning properly, it can impact breathing, sleep, speech, and even facial growth over time. Nasal breathing + proper oral muscle function = a strong foundation for development.

💡 How myofunctional therapy helps:
• Trains the tongue to rest in the correct position
• Strengthens lip seal and nasal breathing patterns
• Improves swallowing and chewing coordination
• Supports better sleep and airway function
• Works alongside providers like ENTs, dentists, and bodyworkers

💛 Early support matters:
The earlier we address these patterns, the easier it is to guide healthy growth and prevent long-term concerns.

If your child is mouth breathing, it’s worth a closer look — small changes in function can lead to big changes in overall health.

Thumb sucking is a natural reflex for many little ones—but when it continues beyond the early years, it can start to impact more than you might think. 👶💭

Prolonged thumb sucking can affect:
• Jaw growth and alignment
• Tooth positioning (hello, open bites + overbites)
• Proper tongue posture
• Speech development

The earlier we address the habit, the easier it is to guide healthy oral and facial development as your child grows. 💛

If you’re noticing your child still relying on thumb sucking, you’re not alone—and there are gentle, supportive ways to help them transition away from it.

Have questions or wondering when to step in? We’re here to help every step of the way. ✨

🤱 Breastfeeding After C-Section: What to Expect 🤍

Recovering from a C-section while learning to breastfeed is no small task — you’re healing and nurturing at the same time. 💛

Here’s what you might experience (and how to make it easier):

🌿 Positioning matters: Try side-lying or football hold to avoid pressure on your incision.
💧 Milk may come in a bit later: That’s normal — frequent skin-to-skin and feeding helps stimulate supply.
😣 You may need extra support: Pain, swelling, or medication can affect comfort and energy.
💛 Gentle movement and patience go a long way: Healing takes time, and so does finding your rhythm.

You did something incredible — bringing your baby safely into the world. With a little support and a lot of grace, breastfeeding after a C-section is absolutely possible. 🌸

🍼 Understanding Reflux vs. Normal Spit-Up 🍼

All babies spit up — but how do you know what’s normal and what might be reflux? 🤔

✨ Normal spit-up
• Small amounts after feeds
• Baby seems content and continues feeding well
• Often peaks around 2–4 months, then improves over time
• Typically happens without distress or discomfort

🔥 Reflux (GERD)
• Frequent or forceful spit-up or vomiting
• Baby seems uncomfortable: arching back, crying, refusing feeds
• Poor weight gain or frequent coughing/choking
• Symptoms may disrupt sleep or feeding routines

If your baby seems fussy, uncomfortable, or isn’t gaining well, it’s worth checking in with your pediatrician and a lactation consultant. Sometimes small feeding adjustments — like positioning, pace, or latch — can make a big difference. 🌿

Remember: most babies outgrow reflux as their digestive system matures — and you’re doing a great job supporting them through it. 🤍
