🛡️ INFECTIONS & CHRONIC DISEASE: SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM! 🌿

Over years of clinical practice, I’ve recognized the important role infections and inflammation can play in chronic conditions. Daily immune support matters—not just when you’re sick!

❄️ WHY WINTER CHALLENGES YOUR IMMUNITY

From now through April, three factors work against us:

☀️ Less sunlight: In the Northeast, skin produces very little vitamin D from October through April.

🏠 More time indoors: Closed windows and crowded spaces increase virus exposure.

🌬️ Cold, dry air: Dry air can weaken the protective lining of your nose and throat—your first line of defense.

💚 BUILD YOUR DEFENSES DAILY

Your immune system is built over months, not days. Nutrient status and gut health matter, so waiting until you feel a cold coming on may be too late to start supporting your defenses.

🌱 THE FOUNDATION: KEY NUTRIENTS

🔹 Vitamin D3: Supports immune cell function. Monitor your levels with lab testing.

🔹 Zinc: Helps your immune system respond effectively.

🔹 Vitamin C: Supports immune cells during stress and infection.

Botanical, mushroom-based, and gut-supporting formulas may also help, depending on your individual needs. No two protocols in my office are the same! Your health history and assessment results guide your plan.

💪 DAILY HABITS THAT HELP

✅ Aim for 6–8 hours of sleep. ✅ Limit sugar and refined foods. ✅ Drink plenty of water and warm herbal teas. ✅ Gargle with warm, unrefined salt water during cold and flu season. ✅ Move your body and get outdoors for at least 20 minutes. ✅ Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating.

💚 MY RECOMMENDATION

If immune support isn’t part of your current health protocol, I encourage you to schedule an immune assessment. Together, we’ll build a personalized plan to support your health through winter and into spring!

A Supplement to Help Manage Stress 🌿

Many of you have asked about natural ways to manage stress and improve sleep. This week, let’s look at what research says about L-Theanine, an amino acid naturally found in tea.

What is L-Theanine?

L-Theanine supports relaxed alertness, helping you feel calmer without making you drowsy. It may also complement caffeine by reducing jitters while supporting focus.

What Does the Research Suggest?

-Stress & Anxiety: May help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety, along with certain physical stress responses.
-Sleep: May support better sleep quality, easier winding down, and feeling more rested.
-Focus: When combined with caffeine, may improve attention while reducing jitters.
-Mood: Early research suggests potential benefits for tension and mood balance.

Studies commonly use 200–400 mg daily, though individual needs vary. L-Theanine is not a treatment for diagnosed anxiety, depression, insomnia, or high blood pressure.

Who Might Benefit?

-Adults experiencing everyday stress.
-Those who struggle to quiet racing thoughts at bedtime.
-People seeking steady focus without caffeine jitters.
-Anyone looking for non-habit-forming support during stressful periods.

Where Can You Find It? 🍵

Tea is the natural source of L-Theanine. Japanese matcha, particularly shade-grown varieties, can provide more than many other teas because you consume the whole powdered leaf. Green tea and white tea also contain L-Theanine, while black and roasted teas generally contain less. Amounts vary widely, and a cup of green tea may provide approximately 5–85 mg.

For a more concentrated option, I also offer an L-Theanine supplement. I recommend my premium-grade Japanese matcha for those who prefer a tea-based approach.

A Final Note: If you take prescription medication and are considering adding L-Theanine to your daily routine, please call my office to schedule a consultation so we can discuss what's appropriate for you.

🍂 STAYING WELL THIS SEASON! 🍂

October is the time to prepare your body for cold and flu season! Shorter days, less sunlight, and more time indoors can challenge our immune defenses. Here’s my approach to supporting your wellness through the winter months.

🌞 YOUR FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE
Vitamin D supports immune function. I recommend Vegan Vitamin D3+K2 daily to support immune health and strong bones. A simple salt-water gargle can help rinse away throat irritants: dissolve ½ tsp. Premier Pink Salt in 8 oz. warm water, gargle, and spit.

💪 SUPPORT YOUR IMMUNE CELLS
Vitamin C helps support normal immune function. Plant Vitamin C provides vitamin C from amla fruit and rose hips, along with quercetin and hesperidin. Nucleo Immune contains beta glucans and nucleotides to support immune-cell function.

🌿 DON'T FORGET YOUR GUT!
Your digestive tract plays an important role in immune health. I recommend Aloe capsules and Aloe powder for digestive lining support, plus Fermented Mushroom Blend, featuring six organic mushrooms and prebiotic fiber to support beneficial gut bacteria.

🧄 NATURE'S ALLIES
Olive Leaf Immune combines olive leaf with mushrooms and botanicals. Allicidin provides a stable form of garlic's allicin alongside other plant ingredients.

🛁 A LITTLE SELF-CARE
Enjoy a Medi-Soak mineral foot bath or full bath every other morning. Soak for 15–20 minutes, then enjoy some outdoor daylight when possible.

❤️ THE DAILY BASICS MATTER MOST!
✔️ Get 7–9 hours of sleep.
✔️ Wash your hands frequently.
✔️ Eat colorful fruits and vegetables.
✔️ Drink plenty of water and herbal teas.
✔️ Keep moving and prioritize stress management.

Supplements complement—not replace—a healthy lifestyle, recommended vaccinations, and good hygiene.

🍫 The Sweet Truth About Dark Chocolate

Healthy, delicious, and best enjoyed with intention.

I love chocolate—not the candy-aisle variety, but deeply flavored dark chocolate made with quality cacao. For years, I’ve crafted my own chocolates and shared them with clients who enjoy them as part of a balanced plan.

Dark chocolate is one of those rare foods that can be both a pleasure and a source of nourishment. Cacao is rich in flavanols, plant compounds that support nitric oxide production, healthy blood flow, and circulation.

Quality dark chocolate also provides:
✨ Magnesium, iron, copper, manganese & zinc
✨ Fiber to support beneficial gut bacteria
✨ Theobromine, a gentle natural stimulant

But not all chocolate is created equal.

When choosing dark chocolate, look for:
• 70% cacao or higher
• A short, simple ingredient list
• No “processed with alkali” or Dutch processing, which can reduce flavanol content
• Organic, carefully sourced cacao
• No hydrogenated oils or artificial flavors

Research has linked cocoa flavanols with cardiovascular benefits, better blood flow, and potential benefits for blood sugar and memory. The important point: these benefits come from cacao, not from highly processed, sugar-filled candy.

And remember: nothing in excess. Chocolate is still a treat.

My favorite approach? Enjoy about one ounce a few times a week, preferably after a meal. Savor it slowly—you may find that a little goes a long way.

🍓 From My Kitchen: Dina’s Organic Chocolates

I make my chocolates with organic ingredients, rich dark chocolate, and minimal sugar. Favorites include:

🍫 Dark Chocolate Raspberry Flowers
🍫 Dark Bark with Probiotic Gummies
🍫 Dark Chocolate Truffles—raspberry, matcha & classic
🍫 Dark Chocolate Hearts—cherry lavender & green tea lemon

Healthy doesn’t have to mean deprived. Sometimes, choosing well can be delicious, too. ❤️

Michelle’s Story: 15 Pounds Down—and What Her Body Was Telling Her

When Michelle first came to The Khader Center during COVID, she had a goal: lose 10–15 pounds and learn how to take better care of her overall health.

We created a personalized program based on her biocommunication testing and changed her diet from the ground up. Michelle ultimately lost 15 pounds, reduced her body fat, and saw improvements in her health markers.

“I feel healthier. I look better. People that haven't seen me in a long time comment on how good I look for my age, which is 58, by the way.”

But her story didn’t end with weight loss.

At several follow-up visits, her testing continued to point toward her teeth—even though she had no pain and her dentist had not identified a problem.

Michelle eventually saw a new dentist, who referred her to an oral surgeon. A wisdom tooth was found to be problematic and was removed. Within a week, her sinuses cleared, and the recurring issues she had experienced in her head, neck, and left side improved.

At her next visit, Michelle didn’t tell me what had happened. She wanted to see what the testing would show on its own.

“[Dina] said, without even looking, ‘It’s your teeth, right?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’”

Once the tooth was addressed, many of the supplements she had been taking were no longer needed.

Michelle says:

“Dina has helped me tremendously over the last four years, and I highly recommend her services.”

I don’t diagnose dental disease or replace your dentist. My role is to listen carefully to what the body is communicating and, when something needs further attention, help guide you toward the appropriate specialist.

Is your body trying to tell you something?

Maybe you have 10–15 pounds that won’t move. Maybe a symptom keeps coming back. Michelle’s story is a reminder that sometimes we need to look beyond the obvious.

Lyme Disease Is More Than One Bacterium and More Than One Tick

Most people think of Lyme as one infection caused by one bacterium and one tick bite. The reality is more complicated—and that matters when it comes to prevention, evaluation, and treatment.

Lyme & co-infections: Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia bacteria transmitted by blacklegged and western blacklegged ticks. But ticks can carry multiple organisms, including Bartonella, Babesia, and Francisella tularensis (tularemia). Each behaves differently and requires a different approach.

Not every infection requires a tick bite: Bartonella can be transmitted through fleas, lice, sand flies, biting flies, mosquitoes, mites, chiggers, ticks, and cat scratches/bites. Tularemia can spread through ticks, deer flies, and mosquitoes. Babesia is primarily tick-borne, but can also be transmitted through blood transfusion and, rarely, from mother to child. So, not remembering a tick bite does not necessarily rule out a tick-borne illness.

Why symptoms can be so widespread: When multiple organisms are involved, symptoms may affect different systems of the body. Different strains of Borrelia can also behave differently—some remaining localized while others affect joints, the nervous system, or heart. Co-infections such as Babesia may require a completely different treatment approach because Babesia is a parasite, not a bacterium.

Biofilms may be another piece: Research has found that Borrelia can organize into protective biofilm structures that may help bacteria survive treatment. This is one area I consider when developing a more individualized approach to Lyme and co-infections.

Prevention matters: Use appropriate repellents, wear light clothing, tuck pants into socks, avoid tall grass/leaf litter when possible, and perform a full-body tick check after being outdoors—especially around the hairline, ears, and groin.

Support overall immune health with adequate sleep, balanced blood sugar, good nutrition, and attention to gut health.

🍬 What New Research Reveals About Sugar Substitutes

New research presented this month at the European Society of Cardiology Congress raises important questions about xylitol (birch sugar), a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free and low-carb products.

🔬 What did researchers find?

A study of 17,710 people in Canada and the UK found that those with the highest blood xylitol levels had:

• 57% higher risk of a major cardiovascular event over 6 years
• 18% higher risk over 30 years

Major cardiovascular events included cardiovascular death, heart attack, or stroke.

The researchers also found that risk increased with higher blood xylitol levels, independent of age, s*x, weight, blood pressure, and diabetes.

These findings build on earlier research from the same team and laboratory evidence suggesting xylitol may increase platelet activity, potentially contributing to clotting.

🔎 Where is xylitol found?

Check labels on:
• Sugar-free gum & mints
• Toothpaste
• Baked goods
• “Keto” & low-carb packaged foods

🌿 What about alternatives?

No sweetener — natural or otherwise — is a health food. I generally recommend limiting sugar substitutes and using sweeteners thoughtfully.

Stevia & monk fruit: Single-ingredient products have a relatively reassuring cardiovascular evidence profile to date. Check labels for added sugar alcohols.

Date sugar: May provide some fiber and minerals; evidence for health benefits is still early.

Honey: May have some favorable metabolic effects, but should still be used in moderation.

Jaggery: Contains more minerals than refined sugar, but is still concentrated sugar and should be limited, especially with diabetes.

Erythritol: Separate research has also raised cardiovascular concerns, so I don't consider it automatically safer than xylitol.

Bottom line: Check your ingredient labels and consider your individual health history when choosing sweeteners.

At The Khader Center, we offer stevia packets, date sugar powder, and honey — thoughtfully selected options you can incorporate into your kitchen.

Please share this alert with friends and family.

Easy Black Lentil Burgers Recipe

Makes: 4 burgers
Prep: 25 minutes, plus time to cook the lentils
Cook: 10–12 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

*Choose organic ingredients whenever possible.*

-2 cups cooked Beluga black lentils, cooled and drained
-¾ cup brown rice flour
-½ cup chopped onion
-¼ cup walnuts, broken into pieces
-2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried basil)
-2 cloves garlic
-Oil, for cooking

Before You Start: Cook the Lentils

Cook the Beluga black lentils according to the package directions until tender. Drain well and let them cool before making the burgers. You want the lentils fairly dry so the burger mixture holds together.

DIRECTIONS:

1) Make the burger mixture: Add the cooked lentils, ¼ cup brown rice flour, onion, walnuts, basil, and garlic to a food processor. Pulse until everything is coarsely chopped and the mixture holds together.

2) Shape the burgers: Form the mixture into 4 patties, about ½ inch thick.

3) Coat the patties: Brush both sides of each patty lightly with oil, then coat with the remaining brown rice flour.

4) Cook: Heat a grill pan or large skillet over medium heat. Cook the burgers for 10–12 minutes, turning once halfway through. If they brown too quickly, lower the heat to medium-low.

5) Enjoy!

Tip: Toast the walnuts first for extra flavor, if you have a few extra minutes.
