Those aren't your only options. They only feel that way because addiction narrows the field until you can't see anything but the two worst outcomes.

When someone you love is facing addiction, you get handed a lot of things. Slogans. Opinions. A pamphlet in a waiting room. A brochure with a phone number on it. What almost nobody hands you is an actual guide to what's happening in your family and what is within your control to do about it.

So you piece it together. A little from a podcast, a little from a friend of a friend who went through something similar, a little from whatever you found at 2am. And you're left doing the hardest thing you've ever done with no instructions at all.

You deserve better than that. Understanding what addiction has been doing to your family is what lets you step out of crisis mode and into a role you can actually sustain, and that understanding is learnable.

Here’s the hard truth I offer well-meaning families: all that monitoring and managing usually isn’t helping the way you hope it is. It keeps you in a constant state of alert, and it can quietly keep the whole family stuck in the same painful pattern. The role feels like love. It often functions more like a trap, for you and for them.

The definition of addiction I use in my course doesn't mention drugs or alcohol. I want families to understand that the substance is simply the most effective vehicle available to get to temporary comfort.

What this disease is really about is an intolerance of discomfort so severe that a person truly believes they cannot survive it. It is an avoidance of discomfort at any cost. When you understand that, the predictable patterns of addiction start to make sense. It doesn't make the wreckage smaller, but it changes our understanding of what this battle is even about.
