📚 BACK-TO-SCHOOL TIPS FOR PARENTS ✏️🍎
Back-to-school season can be exciting…and also a LOT. New schedules, earlier mornings, homework, activities, lunches, and big emotions can make the transition challenging for the whole family.
A few simple things can make those first weeks a little smoother:
⏰ Start the routine now. Move bedtime and wake-up time toward the school schedule—even 15–20 minutes at a time helps.
👕 Prep the night before. Clothes out, backpacks packed, shoes located, water bottles ready. Fewer morning decisions = less morning chaos.
🥪 Keep lunches simple. A protein + fruit/veggie + carb + favorite snack is perfectly fine. It doesn’t have to be Pinterest-worthy!
📋 Create a “landing zone.” Pick one spot for backpacks, shoes, lunchboxes, permission slips, and anything that needs to leave the house tomorrow.
🗓️ Use a visual schedule. Kids often do better when they can see what’s coming next. Pictures work great for younger kids; a simple written checklist works for older kids.
💛 Expect some after-school decompression. Kids work HARD all day. Hunger, tears, irritability, silliness, or needing to be alone may simply mean, “I’ve held it together all day and I’m done.” Snack first. Questions later.
🌳 Build in movement. A few minutes outside, jumping, swinging, walking, biking, or heavy work after school can help kids regulate before tackling homework.
🌈 And for our kids who need a little extra support…
Transitions can be especially difficult for children with ADHD, autism, sensory differences, anxiety, developmental delays, communication differences, or other unique needs.
❤️ Practice before the first day. Drive the school route, visit the playground, look at pictures of the teacher/classroom, or practice the morning routine.
🎧 Plan for sensory needs. Comfortable clothes, seamless socks, preferred foods, headphones, fidgets, movement breaks, or a quiet space can make a BIG difference.
🧠 Reduce demands after school. Your child may have used every ounce of regulation they had to navigate the school day. Home can be their safe place to recover.
🗣️ Share what works with the school team. You know your child incredibly well. Let teachers and therapists know what helps them communicate, regulate, transition, and feel successful.
⭐ Focus on connection before perfection. The goal isn’t a flawless first week. It’s helping your child feel safe, supported, and confident as they adjust.
And remember, every child deserves to feel like they belong at school exactly as they are. 💛
Here’s to a wonderful school year filled with growth, connection, learning, and plenty of grace for our kids and ourselves. 🍎✏️📚
