The Mt Vernon Veterans Home Assistance League was formed in 1983 to provide additional enrichment resources for the Veterans in residence at the Missouri Veterans Home - Mt. Vernon. The League is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with an unpaid board of directors that oversees the operations of the League. All funds donated to the League are put toward the varied needs of our Veterans. Over the years, the League has helped with the acquisition of transport buses to help transport Veterans to outings and events, helping fund the Veterans pavilion to provide a quality outdoor space for Veterans and families to enjoy, sponsoring Holiday celebrations for the Veterans and families, and paying for activities and extras that help enrich the lives of those that live in the Home. The League sponsors several fundraisers throughout the year, including the Boots on the Green Golf Tournament, the Ride for Freedom Motorcycle Poker Run, and others.

Friday night was game night at the Cardinals. We were blessed and honored to receive a very generous donation for the Mt Vernon Vet Home Asst League to continue the enrichment activities and support for our Hero Veterans. Blake Demore from the Greater Springfield MO USBC, presented a check to our Volunteer Services Coordinator on the field before the game. Thank you USBC for your continued support!

Today, on Flag Day, we also commemorate the U.S. Army’s birthday.

May we always remember the strength, unity, and freedom the flag of the United States of America represents, and those who have fought to protect it.

Today we got a visit from Lt Governor David Wasinger, who visited our facility with our Missouri House Representative - District 157 Mitch Boggs, Executive Director of the Missouri Veterans Commission Paul Kirchhoff, and Director of the Missouri Veterans Commission Homes Program Joan Elwing. Local officials, Jasmine Burk - Ward 3 Alderman for Mt Vernon, and Randy Burke - Mayor of Monett joined them for a brief tour of the Home, led by our Administrator April Cutbirth. We were honored to host our leadership from Jefferson City today and share our love for our Home and our Veterans.

What an amazing day yesterday! We had a poker walk and celebration with all our Veterans, provided by several chapters of Daughters of the American Revolution and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. The Veterans had a great time and won a little prize money along the way! There was cake and some incredible ice cream for everyone.
Then the ladies from VFW 2590 Auxiliary brought in festive clown cupcakes for everyone at dinner time.
We love a day filled with laughs and smiles from all our beloved Heroes here!

Today is National D-day Remembrance Day. Let's all take a moment to remember those who fought for freedom that day in World War II.

On June 6, 2026, the National D-Day Memorial will celebrate 25 years of honoring our heroes’ valor, fidelity, and sacrifice on D-Day. This month’s will test your knowledge of the Memorial itself!

This iconic feature of the Memorial, the Overlord Arch commemorates the Allied victory on D-Day. Among the layers of symbolism is the very height of the Arch. How tall does the Overlord Arch stand? Put your guesses in the comments and check back tomorrow for the answer!

We had a very busy Friday here at the Home. A fantastic day ended with a special group of visitors. The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War was in the area for their department convention. So they came by to make a very kind donation of supplies and get a tour of the Home. It was a pleasure meeting them all and sharing this amazing facility with them. Even the Veterans and nursing staff got into the tour to say hello and share their love for Missouri Veterans Home - Mt. Vernon and our mission to provide the best possible home for our Hero Veterans. Thank you for spending some time with us, ladies! It was our pleasure.
