Addiction and Family Guilt: How Guilt Can Lead to Enabling
Guilt can make you feel like you have to do something to prove you care.
You may think:
“If I don't help, I'm failing them.”
“What if something happens because I didn't step in?”
But those beliefs can lead to rescuing, fixing, and enabling behaviors that keep unhealthy patterns in place.
Breaking the cycle starts with asking:
Is this guilt coming from love, or from believing I am responsible for their choices?
You can love your family member, support their recovery, and still allow them to experience the responsibility that belongs to them.
❤️ Letting go of guilt doesn't mean letting go of love.
