Cyclosporiasis has made its way to Baxter County according to the Arkansas Department of Health. Specific source of this outbreak undetermined but highly suspected to be related to bagged lettuce and/or lettuce from fast food establishments.

💩 🥬 update ⬇️

As of yesterday, August 3rd, Arkansas has 173 cases of confirmed cyclosporiasis. No confirmed cases in Baxter County, so far.

There have now been two reported deaths linked to cyclosporiasis, both in Michigan.

This parasite is spread via contaminated, raw produce. Practice good hygiene, always. Cooking your produce minimizes the chances of contracting this infection.

Our long time office manager, Wendy Presley, is retiring and we are so sad about it! Wendy has worked at RFM for 34 years and she is amazing at her job. We wish her all the best in retirement, but she’s certainly leaving big shoes to fill.
She is not big on photos so we hired an artist to produce a rendering of her likeness to commemorate this event. ⬇️

💩 🥬 Cyclosporiasis aka “diarrhea lettuce” update:

There is a national outbreak of a parasitic diarrheal illness and investigations are ongoing.

Arkansas is now up to 79 cases, mostly in Benton County (the Bentonville/Rogers area) but there have been reported cases in nearby Boone and Marion counties as well.

Cyclospora is an infection of the small intestine that causes frequent, watery diarrhea and explosive bowel movements. Some people will recover on their own without intervention but it is treatable with antibiotics. Unfortunately, without treatment, symptoms can improve and then suddenly recur.

It is spread by consuming contaminated fruits and vegetables.

Cooking food should kill the parasite, but washing produce may not be enough to prevent the spread. Good hygiene still matters though! Wash your hands before you eat and wash your produce anyway!

If you watch the news you may have heard about cyclosporiasis. There have been some suspected cases in the state and this parasite seems to likely be spread by contaminated produce. Heed the warning! ⬇️

There’s an increase in cyclosporiasis (a parasite that can cause watery, sometimes explosive, diarrhea) reported in multiple states. What to know:

🌱 Cyclosporiasis is often linked to fresh produce. UPDATE AS OF JULY 13: While the investigation is ongoing, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has reported that current results point to lettuce or salad greens as a potential source for this outbreak, although other food items cannot be completely ruled out. No specific type of produce, grower, or supplier has yet been identified as the source. Public health professionals are still hard at work investigating.

🗓️ Symptoms usually start 2–14+ days after exposure.

✅ Direct person-to-person spread is unlikely.

🥼It can be treated with antibiotics, plus rest and hydration. Talk to a health care provider if you have symptoms.

🚽 If not treated, symptoms may last from a few days to over a month and can recur.

NOTE: While washing produce is always important and could reduce risk, cooking produce is a more reliable way to kill the parasite.
