It's Birth Trauma Awareness Week. 1 in 3 people giving birth in the US experience birth trauma. What people say in response are often not helpful and may cause further harm. Here are a few things people commonly say, a reason not to say them, and what to you might say instead:

1. “I’m sorry you feel that way.” Trauma isn’t a feeling. It’s a profound psychological and physiological experience. Instead say: “I’m sorry this happened to you. I’m here to listen if you want to talk about it.”

2. “They were just trying to keep you and baby safe.” Intent does not erase impact. Safe is more than survival. Instead say: “You can be physically safe and still be deeply traumatized by how it happened.”

3. “At least you and baby are ok.” A healthy baby does not erase birth trauma. Avoid any phrase that starts with “at least.” Instead say: “It is completely understandable that you felt scared and powerless in that moment.”

4. “Healthy baby is what matters.” Your client’s health matters too, not just physically, but also emotionally. Don’t ask someone to dismiss their experience, dignity, or consent. Instead say: “Your emotional and well being health matter too.”

5. “Birth doesn’t always go according to plan.” Birth trauma is not always caused by an unexpected outcome. In fact, it’s likely to happen because of not feeling seen or heard (PMID: 28528179). Instead say: “It’s ok to grieve the experience you wanted and take time to process it. I am here for you through all of it.”

If a person feels safe and well taken care of during the birth process, the overall experience may be positive despite any serious complications. (PMID: 31580998)

Factors that increase a person´s chance of having a positive birth experience:
* Opportunity to meet the care provider assisting at the birth prior to labor
* Continuous information about labor progress
* Time allotted for questions and an opportunity to participate in decisions during labor
* A supportive and competent care provider
* Having a doula

Thinking about becoming a doula? Here are 5 reasons why taking a combined birth & postpartum workshop changes everything:

1. True continuity of care
Clients spend months building trust with their birth doula, only to say goodbye right when the "fourth trimester" chaos hits. By mastering both skill sets, you provide a seamless, comforting bridge of support from the first contraction to the first few weeks at home.

2. Better client insight
Every birth doula should understand postpartum recovery, and every postpartum doula should understand birth. Why not learn it all at the same time and put your skills to work right away?

3. A smarter investment
A combined workshop streamlines your foundational education into one immersive experience. You get certified faster, pay less overall, and launch your business with a complete toolkit from day one.

4. Steady income stream and schedule
Combining both services for one client allows you to stabilize your monthly income while keeping your calendar flexible for the unpredictability of birth.

5. Instant competitive advantage
The world of birth and postpartum support and insurance coverage is growing. Clients want individualized, comprehensive care, not piecemeal services. When interviewing with clients, being able to offer an all-in-one package makes you an easy choice over doulas who only can only cover one part.

Ready to launch your birth & postpartum doula career? Register for one of our combined birth & postpartum doula training workshops. Don't just learn half the story. Master the whole journey.

Here's what people were saying about the Spring 2026 Birth and Postpartum Doula workshops at Harmony Doula Mentoring:

"Teri made this course extremely enjoyable, and I learned so much from her. She made the idea of becoming and practicing as a doula feel much less daunting than I had imagined it might be." - 5 stars

"I'm coming out of this with an excitement to honor and welcome other people as they are. Teri did a fantastic, consistent, and authentic job modeling how life really plays out and how we as doulas can respond and meet any moment. I really enjoyed her class and will recommend it to anyone I meet who is interested in pursuing a doula training class. Thank you so much!" - 5 stars

"Instructor was well prepared and provided real life scenarios to help us make practical application of what we were learning. She frequently referenced how applying what we were learning can help us if we are pursuing certification. The guided notes made it easy to follow along and retain important information for later. I've attended other birth and full spectrum classes in the past bur I like how our instructor clearly defined the roles between birth and postpartum and helped us to understand the value of lactation support in both roles. Because of attending this course I have a better understanding of how a [doula] can be the difference." - 5 stars

"This course was absolutely wonderful and made me feel so validated in my journey to be a doula" - 5 stars

"very informative and interactive. so polite. funny. transparent. replies to all questions. open to new information" - 5 stars

"We had a very diverse group in our class and our instructor did all the things in a way that felt authentic to who she is day to day. I appreciate that she didn't try to overdo it as I have seen a lot. She spoke to what needed to be spoken to, used inclusive language through out, while being mindful of the sensitivities of others." - 5 stars
