Not all peanut oils are the same.

There are two main types of peanut oil:
• Highly refined peanut oil
• Unrefined/cold-pressed peanut oil

Peanut allergy reactions are triggered by proteins and the amount of protein present can differ depending on how the oil is processed.

Highly refined peanut oil undergoes extensive processing that removes most allergenic peanut proteins, while unrefined peanut oils may still contain proteins capable of triggering allergic reactions.

This is why understanding the type of peanut oil being used matters particularly in restaurants and food preparation settings.

Restaurant practices can vary, and staff may not always know whether an oil is refined or unrefined.

Always discuss individual allergy management decisions with your healthcare team.

The research moves quickly, the guidance shifts, and it isn't always easy to know which information is current or what it means for your family. That's exactly the gap this event is designed to close.

On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is bringing its Regional Summit to the Stanford Faculty Club for a full day of evidence-based guidance from the specialists advancing food allergy care. It's built for caregivers, adults with food allergy, and tweens and teens (11+) and it's completely free to attend.

This is a practical, informative day. You'll learn what to do in an allergic emergency, hear the latest on new treatments and research, and get real-world advice for managing food allergy at school, when eating out, and while travelling, including the everyday stress that comes with it. Teens also have their own dedicated sessions, designed just for them.

🕷️ Tick bites and food allergy: understanding alpha-gal syndrome

Did you know that, in some people, a tick bite can trigger a rare food allergy called alpha-gal syndrome (AGS)?

Alpha-gal syndrome is a rare IgE-mediated food allergy that can develop after a tick bite. It occurs when the immune system becomes sensitised to alpha-gal, a molecule found in mammalian products. People with AGS may experience allergic reactions after eating mammalian meats, such as beef, pork, lamb, or venison. Some people may also react to other mammal-derived products, including gelatin or dairy.

Unlike many food allergies, reactions are often delayed, occurring several hours after eating. Symptoms can include hives, swelling, stomach symptoms, breathing difficulties, and in some cases, anaphylaxis.

As summer brings more outdoor activities, remember to:
✅ Protect yourself from tick bites
✅ Check your skin, children, and pets after spending time outdoors
✅ Remove ticks promptly if found

If you develop delayed allergic symptoms after eating mammalian products, particularly after a tick bite, speak with a healthcare professional.

Alpha-gal syndrome is uncommon, but awareness is important.
Understanding the link between tick bites and delayed allergic reactions can help support earlier recognition, diagnosis, and appropriate management.

Before joining our clinical trial, Chloey's cashew allergy made everyday situations stressful. Eating at school, dining out, and worrying about accidental exposure were a constant part of life.

Director of Investigational Pharmacy at the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research

Meet Dr. Long, Investigational Drug Services Pharmacist, advancing the future of food allergy treatment.

Andrew joined the Center in 2014 after completing his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. During his final year, a clinical research rotation studying vaccine response in immunocompromised patients sparked his interest in investigational medicine and the immune system, a focus that continues to shape his work today.

At the Center, Andrew oversees management of the investigational products used across an expanding portfolio of clinical trials in food allergy. As the field continues to advance, he serves a key role in the design and development of clinical trials, with an increasing focus on novel, non-allergen-specific biologics and small molecule therapies.
For Andrew, the most rewarding part of his work is seeing the progress patients make, watching individuals who once lived in constant fear of accidental exposure begin to reintroduce those same foods safely into their lives.

“Hearing patients’ stories and seeing their confidence grow reminds me why this work matters,” Andrew shares. “These trials represent hope, not just for patients, but for the future of food allergy care.”

As research continues to support the approval of new treatments and expanded hope and options for all those living with food allergy, Andrew is proud to contribute to a field that has transformed from strict avoidance and emergency response to long-term management and prevention.
