Are you a Medicaid Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) member? If so, there are important changes coming to HIP coverage in 2027 that you’ll want to know about now.
Starting January 1, 2027, Indiana’s Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) will begin enforcing new participation requirements for most HIP members ages 19–64.
Here’s what you need to know:
🔹 80 hours per month: Most HIP members ages 19–64 will need to complete 80 hours each month through work, volunteering, job training, or school. Members can combine activities to reach 80 hours.
🔹 The first look-back period: Although the new requirements officially begin January 1, 2027, non-exempt individuals will need to demonstrate qualifying activity during October, November, and December 2026. Missing the requirement may result in loss of coverage unless an exemption applies.
🔹 Exemptions are available: Certain individuals may not have to meet the 80-hour requirement, including parents or caregivers of children age 13 or younger, pregnant individuals or those within 12 months postpartum, caregivers of someone with a disability, medically frail individuals or those with certain serious health needs, former foster youth under 26, veterans with a 100% disability rating, people in substance-use treatment, individuals who are incarcerated or recently released, federally recognized Tribal members, and others who meet specific criteria.
🔹 Renewals are changing: HIP renewals will move from once a year to every 6 months, while FSSA will check qualifying activity every three months.
📌 Don’t wait until 2027! Now is a good time to check your information, determine whether you qualify for an exemption, prepare to meet the requirements, and set up or review your FSSA Benefits Portal account.
