💙 June is National Men’s Health Month and the perfect opportunity to check in with the men in your life.

Less than half of U.S. men get regular health screenings, according to a 2023 national survey by the Cleveland Clinic, despite having higher rates of heart disease, cancer, and other health conditions.

Why do so many men avoid regular preventive care?

Why do so many men avoid regular preventive care? One reason may be that high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other risk factors do not have obvious symptoms that prompt a healthcare visit. June is National Men’s Health Month and the perfect opportunity to check in with the men in your life

Anyone who has gone through adolescence knows it can be a difficult time to navigate. School is harder, relationships are more complicated, peer pressure is heightened, and the body and mind undergo big changes.

It was during adolescence that Torie Foerster, LMHC, a behavioral health counselor at Open Door and Yorktown native, began to struggle with high levels of anxiety. Her personal experiences became a strong motivator to help other kids and teens with the challenges of growing up. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in counseling at Ball State University and joined Open Door in 2021. While she’s worked with clients of all ages, her primary focus is young people.

“I know how hard those years can be, and I love helping my clients work through them,” said Torie. “I really try to create a space where they feel safe and understood. It is so gratifying to watch them build confidence and develop coping skills to become more resilient. I love being a part of that growth.”

After just a few minutes with Torie, it’s easy to see that she loves her work and cares deeply for others. She greets everyone with an enthusiastic smile and exudes a cheerful and sunny energy. That positive spirit not only helps her clients; it also extends to her co-workers. She has taken the lead in her department on planning pitch-ins, decorating bulletin boards, and celebrating her team members’ personal milestones.

For her team-building efforts, Torie was awarded Open Door’s “Esteem the Team” award for 2025. In her nomination, her peers shared how much she positively influences their work environment:

“Torie is truly a star player on the behavioral health team. She carries herself with grace, enthusiasm, positivity, and does everything she can out of kindness.”

“Her positivity is infectious and her passion for our work reminds me of why we are in the healthcare field. She contributes to planning for department meetings (including a fun pitch-in theme) and always thinks of new ways to advocate for us and our patients. She encourages the team to give 110% by leading by example and supports us when we need it.”

“Torie always goes above and beyond, not only for her clients (who love her), but also for her co-workers. Torie works hard to create a culture of inclusivity and support in behavioral health. She is kind, supportive, and welcoming to all.”

In addition to her work, her husband, and their two-year-old son, Torie is passionate about her four-legged feline family members: Fenny, Penny, Ophie Joe, and Junie. They’ve even modeled for a cat bandana company! As a talented photographer, she loves to capture their personalities for their own Instagram account.

“My goal is to bring a little light into each day for the people around me,” Torie said. For the clients and colleagues that cross her path, that little bit of sunshine makes a big difference.
