33% of pregnancies end in loss.

I have sat with many women who have been sent home to experience loss alone. I have also been the one to frantically search for a baby’s heartbeat with the fetal monitor and stand with the OB as he delivered devastating news.

Support during loss looks like:

•a listening ear
•NO unsolicited advice or ignorant statements like, “you can have another baby or try again soon”
•taking a meal
•validating the baby was baby no matter how small
•being there for support during the actual loss-it is a very scary thing. I’m still not sure why we send mamas home to do this alone.
•take pictures, hand and footprints, make a keepsake
•check in weeks later when everyone has forgotten
•say their baby’s name
•if it is a full term loss offer to have breastmilk jewelry made as a keepsake.
•help plan the arrangements if they don’t have anyone to help.

Loss is something most of us have experienced. I lost a little one at 9 weeks pregnant. It felt abnormal and surreal. I still think of who that person would have been and it’s 18 years later.

Today I am remembering all the mamas I have lost a baby. I am praying for you today. 🙏🏼

A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).

Vomiting in labor is very common and undesired. Tip: drop a few drops of peppermint oil in the emesis (vomit) bag. Smelling rubbing alcohol can help too.
