CPR & AED Save a Life at Elder’s Ace Hardware
How Six Employees Took Action — and Why It Matters

The Situation
At Elder’s Ace Hardware in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, what began as a normal workday quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency.
An employee, Chris Wells, suddenly suffered a cardiac event while on the job.
In cases of sudden cardiac arrest, every second matters. Without immediate intervention, survival chances drop rapidly.
What happened next made all the difference.

The Response
Before emergency responders arrived, six employees stepped in without hesitation.
• Sam Henson
• Joel Edmondson
• Doug LaRusso
• Caitlyn Cavanaugh
• Anna Lindsey
• Taylor Black
They immediately:
• Called for help
• Began CPR
• Retrieved and used an AED
These actions were taken in the most critical window—those first few minutes where survival is determined.

The Outcome
Because of their quick thinking and willingness to act:
Chris survived.
He was later able to return to his coworkers and personally thank the individuals who helped save his life.

Why This Matters
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere—at work, at home, or in public.
What this event demonstrates is simple but powerful:
The people already on scene are often the ones who determine whether someone lives or dies.
CPR and AED use before emergency responders arrive can dramatically increase survival rates.

The Role of Training
Situations like this don’t just happen by chance.
They happen when people:
• Recognize an emergency
• Feel confident to act
• Know how to use CPR and an AED
That confidence comes from training and preparation.

Community Recognition
Code One Safety hosted a Community Lifesaving Recognition Ceremony at Elder’s Ace Hardware to honor these six individuals.
Each was presented with a Lifesaving Recognition Award for their actions.
The event also served as a reminder to the community:
Anyone can be a lifesaver.

What Businesses Can Learn
This incident highlights critical takeaways for every workplace:
• Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere
• Immediate response is essential

⚡ AEDs Save Lives

When cardiac arrest happens in public, quick access to an AED can be lifesaving.

The CARES 2025 Annual Report found that 13.9% of patients who arrested in public had a bystander apply an AED before EMS arrived.

AEDs are designed for everyday people—not just medical professionals. They provide simple voice prompts and guide users through every step.

Today, take a moment to locate the AEDs in your workplace, school, gym, or community center.

🙌 Bystanders save lives.

According to Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival - CARES (CARES), 42.5% of cardiac arrest victims received CPR from a bystander before EMS arrived.

While that's encouraging, it also means that many people still don't receive immediate help during a cardiac emergency.

The person who needs CPR tomorrow could be:
🏠 A family member
🏢 A coworker
⚽ A teammate
🛒 A stranger in the grocery store

The more people trained in CPR, the stronger our communities become.

⏱️ Every minute matters.

The CARES Annual Report shows that the median EMS response time for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests is 7.6 minutes.

During cardiac arrest, a person's chance of survival decreases significantly with every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation. Immediate CPR can help keep oxygen-rich blood flowing to the brain and vital organs until advanced care arrives.

You don't have to be a healthcare professional to save a life.

✔️ Call 911
✔️ Start CPR
✔️ Use an AED if available

Those simple actions can make a life-saving difference.

❤️ National CPR & AED Awareness Week Starts Today!

When someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, immediate action can save a life.

According to the CARES 2025 Annual Report, 42.5% of patients received bystander CPR before emergency responders arrived.

Bystander CPR helps keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs during those critical minutes before EMS arrives.

You don't have to be a healthcare provider to make a difference. Learning CPR gives you the confidence to act when every second counts.

No need to shut down operation for a half or full day. Unlike last time where everyone had to get on the same schedule and pulled away from their job for 4 hours we have a new model.
We can leave the manikin for a week or two to allow ample time for everyone to rotate through.
