After a full day of work at our social work ā€œretreatā€ today to get ready for the new school year, I came to my office tonight to finally finish my sandtray set up from my move. Whew!

I have a small group room here at my new space that will also double as a separate sandtray room for us. My cabinet holds everything I need, except for my baskets of animals and vehicles that are in my playroom. They help prop the doors open, but now that they’re in a different room I will need to think about that… another day.

My favorite thing about my Sandtray cabinet is that it closes when not in use. This was especially important for me to not overwhelm or dysregulate clients, and to not overtake my playroom. I went to this type of cabinet ten years ago, and it’s the best set-up I’ve ever had

I was also able to load all my travel Sandtray boxes and trays from when I used to provide sandtray trainings for up to 25 people. That all stopped with Covid, and then I started teaching fulltime in 2021. I don’t have the need to train as much with teaching, and some other things changed too, including my interest to focus more on natureplay when I do present.

Tomorrow I’m doing my first ever three-hour supervision intensive with four therapists working towards their licensure. We’re going to do some creative activities utilizing Sandtray. (My travel sandtray items will be utilized in this supervision intensive. ) I had a current supervisee request this, so will see how this goes tomorrow! 😊

The past two days I was invited to share about things I am very passionate about. 🩵

Yesterday I was a guest on Scott Shepherd’s new ā€œHopeful by Natureā€ podcast sharing about the importance of nature, play, and specifically nature play for children’s mental health and well-being. We had such a great conversation, and he wants me to come back again! I will share my first podcast with him when it’s available in a few weeks! Until then, Scott has already had several amazing podcasts to listen to: https://open.spotify.com/show/033hSHBTnQghtWI68ktJNk?si=vPSFdiFaRpqRJ1Tb6y-Rog&utm_source=copy-link

Then today I presented to the Noon Rotary Club of Murfreesboro about mental health to begin their series this month on the Four Pillars of Health - which is perfect for August which is National Wellness Month. I was able to include so many positives that we can do to improve or enhance our mental health and emotional wellness: taking time to pause and be still in sanctuary, get good sleep and rest, to be in relationship with otters, to spend time in nature, to be creative, and finally to play, move, and have fun!

I cannot say how much I love to share about these things that bring me so much joy, and that can bring hope to others and help foster resilience. I also get to share about social work too. These are some of my favorite glimmers.✨

This was such a great way to begin this month! I am on a natural high from these experiences. It is always good to be reminded of and to savor the important work we do, why we do it, and those we do it for.

"Birds fly, fish swim, and children play." Dr Garry L. Landreth

These simple yet profound words have become a guiding philosophy for play therapists around the world. They remind us that play is not merely an activity, it is a child's natural language, an essential pathway for expression, connection, resilience and healing.

This British Play Therapy Week, we honour Dr. Garry L. Landreth for his extraordinary contribution to the field of child-centred play therapy. Through his pioneering work, teaching, writing and steadfast belief in children's innate capacity for growth, he has inspired generations of play therapists to trust the therapeutic power of play and the importance of authentic, accepting relationships.

His legacy continues to shape our profession and enrich the lives of countless children and families across the world. Thank you, Dr. Landreth, for helping us all to see children through the language they know best play.
