At MMC Pediatrics, care goes beyond an exam.

When Brittany noticed something wasn't right with her son C**t's eye, Dr. Aaron Ward listened. That decision led to a diagnosis of retinoblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, and ultimately the treatment C**t needed.

Today, C**t is cancer-free, and his family's story is a powerful reminder of the impact a trusted pediatrician can have on a child's life.

"When our son C**t was younger, he presented at a routine appointment with a lazy eye. Dr. Ward listened to us when we told him something wasn't right and didn't waste any time referring us to Vanderbilt. We received the gut-wrenching news that our son, who was only 20 months old at the time, had a rare type of childhood cancer called retinoblastoma.

We are forever grateful for the care Dr. Ward gave us even beyond the exam room. After completing six rounds of chemotherapy, C**t received the news that he no longer required treatments. We threw a huge party to celebrate this milestone, and Dr. Ward brought his family to celebrate with us and even created a Ninja Turtle picture for C**t to hang in his room.

Kids spend a lot of time outside during the summer, which means extra exposure to harmful UV rays, even on cloudy days.

A few reminders from our Pediatrics team:
• Sunscreen isn’t just for the pool or beach
• UV rays can still cause damage on overcast days
• Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when outdoors
• Don’t forget ears, noses, shoulders, and feet
• Hats, sunglasses, and shade help, too

Protecting your child’s skin now helps reduce the risk of sun damage and skin cancer later in life.
