Therapy Tip Thursday - Eliciting the speech sound /k/
When teaching the speech sound /k/, try using a lollipop (with parental consent, of course)! Have the child open their mouth and place the lollipop right behind the alveolar ridge, and have them imitate the /k/ sound. The lollipop keeps the tongue tip from lifting and producing the /t/ sound. The back of the tongue will lift to touch the soft palate and the /k/ sound is achieved. The lollipop serves as a natural reinforcer and encourages the child to practice the sound numerous times during the sessions! It is important that the therapist have control of the lollipop to ensure its correct placement in the child's mouth when working on eliciting the /k/sound.
