This Black History Month, UHIN proudly honors Dr. James McCune Smith, the first Black American to earn a medical degree. He graduated from the University of Glasgow in Scotland when U.S. institutions barred him due to segregation. But his accomplishments didn’t stop there. He went on to become the first Black physician to publish in U.S. medical journals and to open and operate his own pharmacy, serving his community with groundbreaking care and insight.

Dr. Smith recognized the power of data, using medical and census statistics to challenge misinformation and advocate for the health and well-being of marginalized communities. His commitment to truth and access remains an inspiration today.

At UHIN, we share Dr. Smith's belief in using healthcare data to create clarity and drive better outcomes for all. We are reminded this month - and every month - that innovation and inclusion go hand in hand.

Poor work environments increase risks, like anxiety and depression. hashtag providers, care givers, and emergency workers often risk exposure to adverse events, which can negatively impact mental health. Let's take action to create safe, supportive workplaces!

All workers have the right to a safe and healthy environment at work. There are effective actions to prevent mental health risks and support workers with mental health conditions.
