Mediterranean Diet and Whole-Body Health.

The Mediterranean diet is an eating pattern centered on fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, olive oil, and whole grains, while limiting red and processed meats, dairy, saturated fats, and refined sugars. It has been associated with a reduced risk of early death, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, cognitive decline, and several types of cancer. A recent literature review found that several biological processes help explain these benefits, including improvements in cholesterol levels, better blood sugar control, reduced inflammation and cell damage, healthier blood vessels, and a lower tendency for blood to clot.

While heat waves often come to mind when considering the impact of temperature on cardiovascular health, researchers report that 1 in 16 heart-related deaths are associated with cold exposure, compared to just 1 in 300 linked to heat. Experts point to the effects of low temperatures—particularly their ability to raise blood pressure and increase cardiac workload to maintain body heat—as key drivers of heart attack and stroke risk during colder weather.
