If you are enrolled in Medicare, you have probably noticed that Medicare will cover your "medically necessary" adjustment, but it will NOT cover the exam or x-rays needed to determine whether your adjustment is actually "medically necessary". It also does not cover essential therapies that might assist in helping you feel better, faster. This means that despite having Medicare coverage, you are left with increased out of pocket expenses when you visit a chiropractor.
Since 1972, Medicare has only covered spinal manual manipulation from chiropractors and has excluded coverage for exams and other services that state licenses already permit. HR 539, the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act, would update Medicare to cover the full scope of chiropractic care that each state authorizes, without altering any state's scope of practice laws.
This bill embodies priorities such as patient choice, root-cause non-drug care, and removing an outdated federal restriction that pushes seniors toward more invasive options before exploring conservative care. It also respects state autonomy, deferring entirely to each state's existing licensure decisions rather than imposing any new federal standard. As such, we strongly support this bill, and we hope that you will join us in helping to get it passed. We urge you to send an email to your representatives today expressing support for this bill.
