As physicians write orders and pharmacists verify medications, there's another healthcare professional helping build one of the most important pieces of a patient's medical record: an accurate medication history.

Medication reconciliation technicians, or med rec techs, play an important role in the care process by connecting with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare providers about a patient's current medications. They review medication histories, help identify discrepancies, and work closely with the care team to provide accurate information that supports treatment decisions throughout a patient's hospital stay.

"We have a wonderful medication reconciliation program with pharmacy technicians that this organization has invested in, and a lot of organizations don't have that," said Kelly Edwards, pharmacy director at Tidelands Health. "Our Med Rec Techs help create an accurate list of medications patients take at home, which pharmacists review alongside physician orders. That process adds important layers of clinical review before medications ever reach the patient."

While much of this work happens behind the scenes, the impact is felt throughout a patient's hospital stay.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Waves of Light, our annual pregnancy and infant loss remembrance ceremony, at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital last week.

It was an honor to stand with you to remember these precious lives, support one another through grief, and reflect on the love that remains after loss.

To every parent and family carrying this grief, whether you attended the ceremony or remembered quietly in your own way, please know that your baby is remembered, your grief is seen, and you are not alone.

We hold in our hearts all the families touched by pregnancy and infant loss and are grateful to have shared this evening of remembrance by your side.

Congratulations to Walkers for Knockers, the top fundraising team at this year's In the Pink breast cancer awareness walk, raising an incredible $10,475! Led by breast cancer survivor Michelle Palmer, the team helped contribute to more than $125,000 raised overall through this year's event.

When Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, she quickly learned the importance of having a strong support system.

"At the time, we were just 10 days away from closing on our home in South Carolina, where we planned to move permanently in May. What should have been an exciting time in our lives suddenly became filled with fear, uncertainty, and so many unanswered questions," Michelle said. "That experience taught me how important it is to have a village around you. No one should have to face cancer alone."

For Michelle, participating in In the Pink is one way to support others facing the same journey.

"I walk for everyone who has heard the words 'you have breast cancer,' for the families and friends who stand beside them, and for those we have lost. I walk for awareness and, most importantly, for a cure," she said. "Everyone has a story, and this is mine. I am grateful to be here to share it, and I will continue to walk because no one should have to face breast cancer alone. Until we find a cure, we will keep walking, keep raising awareness, and keep fighting together."
