Halloween is a great time to practice connection!
Trick-or-treating creates natural opportunities to practice social-emotional reciprocity in a fun, low-pressure way.
🎃Model, don’t demand: Say “thank you” alongside your child rather than requiring them to perform it.
🎃 Preview what to expect: Practice a few options like “Trick or treat,” “Happy Halloween,” or a wave.
🎃Follow their communication style: Words, gestures, AAC, eye contact—or no eye contact—can all be valid ways to connect.
🎃Notice natural opportunities: Commenting on a costume, sharing excitement, or responding to a neighbor are all reciprocity.
🎃Praise connection, not compliance: Celebrate your child engaging in a way that feels authentic to them. 💙
The goal isn’t “perfect” social behavior—it’s connection, confidence, and self-advocacy. 🍬👻
