🇺🇸🇸🇰 How Slovaks Helped Build America
More than 750,000 people left the Slovak lands for America between 1870 and 1920.
For a nation of just two million people, it was the largest migration in its history.
They crossed the Atlantic with little more than hope, seeking opportunity in America’s mines, mills, factories, and growing cities. Most planned to return home. Many never did.
Instead, they built families, communities, churches, schools, and businesses that would help shape America for generations.
Today, around 2 million Americans trace their roots to Slovakia—the descendants of the men and women who crossed an ocean in search of a better life.
As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we remember the ordinary people whose extraordinary courage connected our two nations.
