Can you believe May has already come to a close? 😱

We’ve spent this month celebrating Better Speech and Hearing Month here in Muskegon, and it has been so rewarding to see so many of you prioritizing your health.

Our goal at Shoreline Hearing Center has always been to remind our community that hearing care is about the bridge to the people and moments you love. Whether it's catching a grandchild’s whisper or staying confident in a busy restaurant, those "small" moments are truly what make life big. 💕

If this month taught us anything, it’s that small changes in your hearing are worth paying attention to before they feel like a "major concern."

Thank you for letting us be your resource for answers last month!

“I shouldn’t even bother with a hearing test today.” 🤧👂

Seasonal allergies and congestion often make people worry their hearing test won’t be accurate. In reality, a comprehensive evaluation can help determine whether hearing changes are caused by middle ear issues, like fluid or pressure, or by the inner ear.

Different testing methods allow us to identify exactly where hearing loss is occurring. Even on congested days, a hearing test can still provide valuable clarity and guidance.

Answers matter more than assumptions.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and dedication are the reason we enjoy the freedoms of everyday life! ❤️🤍💙

As we gather with family and friends this long weekend, we do so with gratitude and reflection. It’s a time to both remember those who served and appreciate the moments we’re able to share because of them.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and restful Memorial Day weekend!

It’s common for people to notice their voices sound different when they’re first fitted with hearing aids. This happens because your brain is hearing sounds it may have missed before.

A helpful tip is to read aloud for a few minutes each day. This allows your brain to adjust more quickly and comfortably. With consistent wear, your voice will sound more natural again.

Small steps like this can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

“What are my options when it comes to getting help hearing?”

The honest answer is… it depends! Hearing health isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s influenced by your hearing levels, your lifestyle, and the environments you’re in every day.

That’s why we believe in taking the time to walk through your options and help you understand what might work best for you.

There are many different tools and levels of support available, and part of our role is to help you:

1️⃣ Understand what’s going on with your hearing
2️⃣ Explore the options that fit your needs and daily life
3️⃣ Feel confident in whatever next step you choose

Whether you’re just starting to notice changes or simply want to learn more, our goal is to make sure you feel informed, supported, and never overwhelmed!

You don’t have to figure it out on your own. We’re here to help every step of the way. 👂✨

Once in a while, a patient tells you something that really sticks with you.

He said, “Last year, when I went on my morning walks, I could hear a group of chickadees chirping. Now I can see them, but I don’t hear them.”

When changes are gradual, your brain fills in the gaps, and it becomes your new normal without you even realizing it!

So we walked through what he had been noticing (or not), then tested his hearing and discussed how softer environmental sounds often fade first. It is not that those sounds disappear… it is that they become harder to pick up.

This is the part that stuck with me. When he came back for his follow-up visit, he told me, “I could hear my footsteps on the gravel and a bird chirping three houses down. I didn’t realize how much life I had been missing. I thought it would be loud, but it’s very natural sounding!”

Are there any sounds that you haven’t heard in a while?

Have you ever thought about how conversations shape your daily life? 👂

Difficulty hearing conversations can affect far more than social moments. Research shows that untreated hearing loss is associated with challenges in education and employment over time.

Clear communication supports confidence, participation, and opportunity at every stage of life. Addressing hearing concerns early can help reduce unnecessary barriers.

🎊👂 It’s Better Speech and Hearing Month!

Every May, I look forward to National Speech‑Language‑Hearing Month! This month is a chance to pause and highlight the importance of communication and hearing health. It is also a moment to recognize how far our field has come.

For those of us in this work, the month is a reminder of the countless stories behind every evaluation, fitting, and breakthrough. As science continues to evolve, our tools get better, and our understanding of communication disorders grows deeper. But the heart of what we do remains the same: helping people connect more fully with the world around them.

As we move through May, I’m grateful for the clinicians who shaped this field, the colleagues who continue to push it forward, and the patients who remind me why this work matters!
