Healing starts with understanding—not judgment.

Many of the symptoms we struggle with aren’t signs that something is wrong with us. They’re signs that our nervous system has adapted to help us survive.

At Firebird Counseling & Wellness, we believe that lasting transformation begins by creating safety in both the mind and body. This Polyvagal Therapy guide offers an introduction to understanding your nervous system and why regulation—not perfection—is the foundation of healing.

When your body feels safe, healing becomes possible.

Today, a new chapter begins. On Target Counseling & Wellness Services is now Firebird Counseling & Wellness.

This change reflects an evolution in how I understand healing and the care I provide. Lasting change rarely comes from addressing thoughts alone. True healing involves the whole person—mind, body, relationships, environment, and life’s natural rhythms.

At Firebird Counseling & Wellness, the work is:
- Nervous system-centered
- Embodied and experiential
- Trauma-informed
- Life cycle-oriented
- Rooted in connection, meaning, and sustainable growth

The goal is not just symptom management, but helping people reconnect with safety, resilience, purpose, and their innate capacity to heal.

The firebird symbolizes transformation—growth that emerges through challenge. Like the phoenix, we all move through seasons that ask us to release what no longer serves us so something stronger and more authentic can emerge.

While the name has changed, the commitment remains the same. I continue to offer compassionate, evidence-informed care while expanding into nervous system regulation, meditation, experiential therapies, EMDR, education, and whole-person wellness.

And this is just the beginning.

In the coming months, I’ll introduce new classes, wellness experiences, the Meditation Den, and offerings that support healing beyond the traditional therapy hour. My vision is a space where people reconnect with themselves, build resilience, and create meaningful lives.

To every client, colleague, referral partner, friend, and supporter—thank you. Your trust has made this possible.

Welcome to Firebird Counseling & Wellness.

Together, let’s rise.

Hyperactivity and overactivity both in the body and mind isn’t always an issue to “fix,” but a sensory need to be met.

When someone is constantly moving, fidgeting, talking, or their mind is racing, their nervous system may be signaling for specific types of sensory input to help them regulate.

Four important sensory systems often play a role:

Proprioceptive Input (Heavy Work) - This is the body's awareness of where it is in space. Activities like pushing, pulling, carrying heavy objects, climbing, or squeezing something tightly provide deep pressure that can be incredibly calming and organizing.

Vestibular Input (Movement & Balance) - This system lives in the inner ear and helps us understand movement. Swinging, rocking, spinning, jumping, or dancing can help some regulate energy levels and improve attention.

Tactile Input (Touch) - Some nervous systems crave texture and touch. Fidget items, dough, sand, soft blankets, weighted items, or simply running hands over different textures can provide grounding sensory experiences.

Oral Regulation - chewing, sucking, sipping through a straw, crunchy snacks, and gum can help regulate the nervous system and improve focus.

The goal isn't to stop movement. The goal is to understand why the movement exists and find intentional ways to meet that need.

When we shift from asking, "How do I make the behavior stop?" to "What does the nervous system need to feel safe and organized?" everything changes. Behavior is communication. The body is always telling a story. đź’ś

A Gentle Reality Check ✨

Most people don’t fail their goals because of discipline—
they quit because they expect perfection.

Progress isn’t linear.
Consistency > perfection.

Instead of asking, “Why did I fall off?”
Ask: “What can I adjust to move forward?”

⸻

Course-correct, don’t quit.

• Revisit your goal—does it still excite you?
• Shrink it—make it too easy to skip
• Remove friction—simplify what felt hard
• Schedule it—what’s planned gets done
• Reconnect to your why—meaning sustains you

⸻

You’re not just chasing goals—
you’re training your brain. 🧠

Every small action strengthens the patterns you’ll live by.

So ask yourself:
Who am I becoming through this?

⸻

Pause before you push forward:

What did you follow through on?
Where were you resilient?
What small wins did you overlook?

It all counts.

⸻

Your reset:

Pick 1–2 priorities.
Show up—don’t show off.
Focus on momentum, not intensity.

⸻

You’re not behind.
You’re in progress.

And every time you begin again,
you reinforce the habit that matters most:

Not quitting.

Want support getting back on track? BrainTap can help reset your focus and momentum.

Why Your Brain Craves Nature

Your brain is wired to respond to nature. Even small exposures—like birdsong or flowing water—can shift your entire state.

Nature-inspired sound can:
• Lower cortisol (stress hormone)
• Calm your nervous system
• Improve focus + mental clarity

The Science Behind It
Nature sounds activate your parasympathetic nervous system—your body’s “rest & digest” mode.

This helps you:
• Slow your heart rate
• Reduce mental fatigue
• Enhance relaxation + recovery

Enter the Alpha State
Soothing, rhythmic sounds guide your brain into Alpha waves—where calm meets clarity.

In this state, you experience:
• Deep relaxation (without sleep)
• Increased creativity
• Stronger mind-body connection

Rewild Your Mind—Anywhere
You don’t have to be outside to reset.

Try this:
• 10–15 minutes of nature sounds
• Close your eyes
• Slow your breath
• Let your body soften

Over time, this simple practice can reduce stress, improve emotional balance, and help you feel more grounded.

Because sometimes the most powerful reset…
is remembering what your mind was designed for.
