*This post is meant to serve as a general guideline for typical progression of self- dressing skills. As always, please remember each child is unique in their own developmental journey.*
🤔Why are self dressing skills important?
Dressing is considered an activity of daily living (ADL). It is one of the first ways that a child develops the ability to organize and plan out a task while manipulating necessary items in their environment.
Dressing is a complex task that requires the integration of multiple skills sets such as: motor planning, cognition, fine and gross motor coordination, visual perceptual and visual motor integration, postural stability, and body awareness.
If you feel like your child is having difficulty with self dressing- talk to your pediatrician at their next well visit. An occupational therapist can provide intervention to treat the underlying skill(s) that are making self dressing difficult. They can also provide you with techniques to modify the task or the environment to improve your child’s independence!
