Your Health Is Worth Fighting For....

Most people spend years chasing the perfect health system. The perfect diet. The perfect plan.

And they still fall off.

Not because the plan was wrong. Because they never built the culture underneath it.

Culture is not a program. It is not a 30-day reset or a supplement stack. Culture is the set of beliefs you carry about yourself before you ever open an app or step on a scale.

Your health culture starts with one conviction: my health is worth fighting for.

Not someday. Not when work slows down. Now.

That conviction changes everything. It is why some people hit a rough week and get back on track Monday morning, while others quit entirely. The plan was the same. The culture was different.

A clear mind and a strong body are not luxury items. They are how you stay in the game. They are how you show up for your family, lead your community, and make decisions from a position of strength rather than exhaustion.

You do not need to be perfect. You need to be committed to something worth protecting.

Your health is that thing.

Build the belief first. The plan follows.

What is one belief about your health you are ready to fight for?

Hashimoto's & Hypothyroidism — What You Can Do

Your thyroid is not the problem. The problem is that nobody has actually tested it properly.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is one of the most common autoimmune conditions affecting women today. Tens of millions are living with it. Most don't even know it. And the ones who do are usually handed a prescription and sent home with no real answers.

Here's what I know after 30+ years in clinical practice: your symptoms are real. The weight that won't move. The fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. The brain fog, the thinning hair, the bloating, the anxiety, the joint pain. That is not aging. That is your immune system attacking your thyroid, and no one has pinpointed WHY.

TSH alone tells you almost nothing.
A complete thyroid workup includes Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TPO antibodies, and Thyroglobulin antibodies. Without those markers, your practitioner is flying blind. Reverse T3 blockage, poor T4-to-T3 conversion, and antibody load are three things TSH will never show.

Once you know your thyroid type, you can act.
Clinically, the research supports: eliminating gluten and dairy as a first dietary intervention. Selenium (200 mcg/day) has been shown to reduce TPO antibody levels. Vitamin D deficiency is nearly universal in Hashimoto's patients. Zinc, magnesium, and omega-3s support thyroid hormone production and reduce systemic inflammation. Avoid iodine supplementation without confirmed deficiency. It can accelerate antibody activity in Hashimoto's.

You also need to identify your triggers. Food sensitivities. Gut permeability. Heavy metal load. Chronic stress driving cortisol into adrenal exhaustion. These are not theories. These are documented drivers.

This is what Test, Don't Guess(TM) means in practice.

If you have Hashimoto's or hypothyroidism and you're still not getting answers, the link in my bio is where to start.

🌾 Not All Oats Are Created Equal — Here's What the Label Isn't Telling You

You picked up the oatmeal. You saw the heart on the box. You thought you were doing the right thing.

You may have been misled.

Here is the truth about oats: the research is real. Beta-glucan, the soluble fiber found naturally in oats, has been shown in clinical studies to lower total cholesterol and LDL — the type of cholesterol most associated with arterial plaque buildup. When LDL oxidizes and accumulates in artery walls, it triggers inflammation. Over time, that becomes plaque. That becomes narrowed vessels. That becomes risk.

So yes. Oats can help. But only if the oat is still an oat.

The problem is what the food industry did to the oat.

Instant oats and most commercial flavored packets go through a heavy processing sequence: steaming, rolling flat, and sometimes pre-cooking. That process fractures the fiber structure. It raises the glycemic index dramatically, meaning your blood sugar spikes faster. And here is the part no one reads on the back panel: those packets often carry 12 to 20 grams of added sugar per serving.

Added sugar raises triglycerides. Elevated triglycerides raise VLDL. VLDL feeds LDL particle production. So the oatmeal marketed to protect your heart may actually be worsening your lipid picture — depending on your metabolic state.

The oat that actually works is the intact oat.

Steel-cut oats. Whole oat groats. These are minimally processed, slow to digest, and preserve the beta-glucan fiber in the form your gut can actually use.

Cook them low and slow. Add blueberries. Add sliced strawberries. Both are high in antioxidants that support vascular health on their own. No syrup. No brown sugar packets. No "natural flavors."

Real food. Real fiber. Real results.

Your cholesterol panel does not lie. Your breakfast choices show up in your numbers. Choose the oat that is still an oat.

💬 Have you made the switch to steel-cut or groats? Drop it in the comments.

Functional Ranges vs. Lab Ranges

Your doctor said your labs are "normal." But you still feel lousy. Let me explain why.

Here's a fact most doctors won't tell you: the "normal" lab range was built on sick people.

I'm not exaggerating. Standard reference ranges are calculated from the average results of everyone who walked into that lab. That population includes people who are pre-diabetic, hypothyroid, inflamed, and exhausted. You get compared to that average and told you're fine.

That's not a health standard. That's a disease average.

Functional ranges are different. They represent where your numbers need to be for your body to actually work. Not survive. Not "not sick yet." Actually work.

Take TSH. The standard lab "normal" range runs roughly 0.5 to 4.5. In functional medicine, I want to see it between 1.0 and 2.0. A TSH of 4.2 shows up as normal on your lab report. But at that level, your thyroid is struggling. Your brain is foggy. Your energy is wrecked. Your weight won't move.

Your doc said normal. Your body said otherwise. Both are telling the truth.

Same story with fasting glucose, ferritin, vitamin D, homocysteine. The gaps between lab normal and functional optimal are where symptoms live.

This is why I built my practice around functional lab interpretation. I look at where your numbers fall on the functional range spectrum. Not just whether they cleared the lab's cut-off.

See that yellow zone on the attached visual chart? That's where most chronically tired, hormonally off, metabolically sluggish people live. Their numbers aren't flagged. Their symptoms aren't validated. And they leave the office with a clean bill of health they don't actually have.

You deserve a standard higher than "not quite sick." Test, Don't Guess.™

Drop a "RANGES" in the comments and I'll send you info on getting a full functional lab review.

When Everything Changes at Once

One phone call. One diagnosis. One empty chair at the table.

And nothing is ever the same again.

Loss does something to a person that words rarely capture. It is not just sadness. It is a full reorganization of life. The routines that anchored your days are gone. The person who knew your story is gone. The future you had planned looks completely different now.

That void is real. And it is heavy.

What most people don't know is that grief is also biological. Loss triggers a sustained cortisol response. Cortisol disrupts sleep. It suppresses immune function. It drives inflammation. In men, prolonged grief tanks testosterone. In women, it destabilizes estrogen and thyroid balance. The hopelessness that follows deep loss is not weakness. It is your body and your soul grieving together.

Scripture never promised that pain disappears. It promised something different. That you are not alone in it. That purpose survives loss. That what feels like an ending can become a beginning you could not have imagined from where you stood before.

"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." — Psalm 147:3

The void left by someone we love does not have to become a permanent residence. Grief has a season. But when the body stays stuck in the stress response long after the acute loss, when sleep won't come, motivation is gone, and nothing feels worth doing, that is a signal worth paying attention to.

You were not designed to stay broken. You were designed to heal.

This Sunday, if you are carrying a loss, know this: the weight you feel is real. The biology behind it is real. And so is the path forward.

Who do you lean on when life reorganizes itself without warning?

Your Armpits May Be Telling You Something About Your Gut

Have you ever noticed your deodorant suddenly doesn't seem to work anymore?

Most people assume they need a stronger deodorant or shower more often. But what if the odor isn't the problem? What if it's a clue?

Here's something most people don't realize: fresh sweat is nearly odorless. The smell develops only after bacteria living on your skin break down proteins and fats in your sweat into odor-producing compounds.

Now here's where it gets interesting.

Your gut and your skin are constantly communicating through what scientists call the gut-skin axis. When your gut microbiome becomes imbalanced—a condition known as dysbiosis—it can increase inflammation, alter immune function, change hormone metabolism, reduce nutrient absorption, and even influence the environment on your skin.

That shift can change which bacteria thrive under your arms and how they interact with your sweat. The result? The same amount of sweating can suddenly produce much stronger body odor.

An unhealthy gut may also contribute to poor digestion, sluggish bile flow, chronic stress, insulin resistance, and nutrient deficiencies, all of which can influence the chemistry of your skin and the way your body smells.

Does this mean every case of body odor starts in the gut? No. Hygiene, genetics, medications, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, and the skin microbiome itself all play important roles. But if your body odor has changed and you haven't changed your lifestyle, your body may be giving you an early warning sign that something deeper deserves attention.

At Functional Wellness, we believe symptoms are messages—not inconveniences to silence.

Instead of simply masking the smell, ask the better question:

Why has my body changed?

That's where functional testing becomes valuable.

Stop Guessing Why The Scale Won't Move 🔬

You wake up exhausted. You eat clean. You move your body. And the scale will not budge.

Your annual physical comes back "normal." Your doctor says everything looks fine. But you know your body. Something is off. You feel it every afternoon when your energy crashes and every morning when you brace for the day ahead. 😔

Here is what most women are never told. A standard physical runs 3 or 4 markers and is designed to detect disease. It was never designed to tell you why your body resists weight loss in your 40s and 50s. The data you actually need is hiding in markers your doctor will not run unless you specifically ask.

The Woman's Weight Loss Lab Package looks at 54 biomarkers across 16 Quest Diagnostic tests. We measure your fasting insulin, HbA1c, and lipid markers to identify metabolic resistance years before glucose flags a problem. We check your Leptin and Adiponectin (the fat cell hormones that govern hunger, fullness, and metabolic rate, and are completely ignored by standard panels). We map your thyroid (T4 Free, TSH), morning Cortisol, Magnesium, Homocysteine, Ferritin, and Vitamin D to reveal whether your energy system or stress response is sabotaging your progress. ✨

Most women want to lose weight to get healthy. It actually works the other way around. You have to be healthy first. Once your foundation is stable, your body releases the weight it was holding for protection.

"Dead Man Walking"

It's a phrase used for someone whose fate is already sealed, even though they're still standing.

What if I told you that describes millions of Americans walking around today?

They're not dying today. They're working. Going to soccer games. Posting vacation photos. Drinking their morning coffee and telling everyone they're "fine."

Meanwhile...

Their blood sugar is climbing.
Their arteries are becoming inflamed.
Their testosterone is declining.
Their liver is overburdened.
Their gut microbiome is collapsing.
Their brain is running on fumes.
Their nervous system has been stuck in survival mode for years.

And their body? It's quietly compensating for all of it.

The human body is brilliant. It will rob Peter to pay Paul for decades before it finally waves the white flag. It will sacrifice hormone production to preserve survival. It will sacrifice sleep to keep you functioning. It will sacrifice muscle mass, cognition, libido, digestion, and eventually quality of life. All so you can make it through another day.

The tragedy is that most people wait for the diagnosis before they decide their health matters.

Heart disease didn't start with the heart attack.
Alzheimer's didn't start with memory loss.
Type 2 diabetes didn't start when your doctor prescribed medication.

Your body whispers long before it screams.

If you're exhausted, inflamed, gaining weight, dependent on medications, losing your edge, or simply don't feel like yourself anymore, those aren't inconveniences. They're intelligence reports from your physiology.

You are either becoming healthier every day or compensating every day.

There is no neutral.

Don't become a dead man walking.
Become a living man thriving.

Your body has been talking to you for years. The question is whether you're finally willing to listen.

The Biopsy Was Scheduled. Then There Was Nothing to Biopsy.
Pat drove to her follow-up appointment expecting a biopsy. Her doctor looked at the site on the back of her upper thigh. The site that had been red, rough, and classified as a rare form of skin cancer called Mycosis Fungoides. A condition serious enough to draw 27 specialists to a conference in Orlando just to study it.

The doctor said: "There's no evidence of it." It was gone. No radiation. No aggressive treatment. Just 30 days on a targeted vitamin and enzyme protocol. Pat had come to me originally for neck pain after surviving four hurricanes and a tornado in Titusville, Florida. But when I heard her history, including the skin cancer diagnosis, I knew we had more to address. I matched her protocol to what her body actually needed, that is, finding the nutrition that was energetically compatible with what the body needed. “Treat the whole body, not the condition that has the body.” Hopefully that makes sense. When her oncologist saw the result, she noted she had seen only one other case resolve like that. The other patient had changed his diet. That was the connection she made.

"Dr. Hicks put me on NUTRA WEST TOTAL HEALTH which are vitamins and enzymes. After 30 days, I noticed a change. The redness in the chafed area on the back of my leg was gone, and the roughness of the texture of that skin patch was smoother. I went back to Dr. Bryan and she was due to perform a biopsy of the area again, but after looking at it, she said no use to do that, 'there's no evidence of it.' It was gone. THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. HICKS!!"
— Pat M, Titusville, Florida.

The body has an extraordinary capacity to heal when you remove the interference and give it the precise tools it needs. Your body reflex points are amazing at what it tells you and what is needed to restore health. Not generic supplements. I am not anti-medicine. I am pro-answers. Pat deserved a real investigation, not just a referral to radiation. When we looked deeper, we found a path forward.
