Feeling stressed? Your body might be holding it in your neck and shoulders.
One of the fastest ways to help calm your nervous system is through a technique called the physiological sigh. Research suggests it can help reduce stress and promote relaxation in just a few breaths.
Here's how to do it:
1. Take a slow inhale through your nose.
2. Before you exhale, take one more short inhale to completely fill your lungs.
3. Then slowly exhale through your mouth until your lungs are empty.
Repeat 3–5 times.
Why does it work?
When we're stressed, we often breathe quickly and shallowly, causing our neck and shoulder muscles to work overtime. The physiological sigh encourages a longer, slower exhale, helping your body shift from "fight or flight" into a more relaxed state. As your nervous system settles, those overworked muscles can begin to let go.
Try it the next time you notice:
• Tight shoulders
• Neck tension
• Feeling overwhelmed
• Headaches related to stress
• Difficulty relaxing
Breathing won't replace hands-on treatment when myofascial restrictions are present, but it can be a powerful tool to support your body's natural ability to relax.
Your breath is something you carry with you everywhere. Sometimes, the first step toward feeling better is simply taking one intentional breath.
Have you ever noticed your shoulders relax after a deep sigh? I'd love to hear about your experience in the comments!
