Tax-Free Weekend starts tomorrow. It covers backpacks, shoes, notebooks, and just about everything else on the supply list.

It does not cover glasses. The SC Department of Revenue puts eyewear on the excluded list.

So while you’re out checking boxes this weekend — the one thing your kid uses every waking minute isn’t on sale. An exam appointment, though, is still open.

A school vision screening is a good start. It is not an eye exam.

The American Optometric Association reports screenings can miss up to 75% of children with vision problems — and that 61% of the kids who do get flagged never make it to a doctor.

Here’s something most parents don’t know: South Carolina doesn’t require an eye exam for your child to start school.

What the state does say — in SC Public Health’s own screening guidance — is that schools should accept documentation from a licensed provider in lieu of the school’s screening.

Translation: one appointment here, and your child’s eyes get properly examined, on paper, and off the school’s list.
