In upper crossed syndrome, both "tight" chest muscles (locked short) and "lengthened" back muscles (locked long) are actually dysfunctional and tense due to adaptive strain from poor posture, not simple weakness on one side.

Locked short vs locked long
Locked short (e.g., pecs, upper traps): Shortened, bundled, and resistant to lengthening because of constant contraction and fascial thickening from forward-head/slouched positions.

Locked long (e.g., lower/mid traps, rhomboids): Stretched beyond optimal length, plastically deformed, and weak at contraction because they adapt to hold the new slouched alignment.

Why posture creates this trap
Slouched desk/phone habits pull the body forward, so muscles and fascia remodel into "straps" to maintain that position, developing trigger points from sustained strain and poor blood flow.

Both sides stay "tight" (hypertonic) but in opposite ways, inhibiting reciprocal relaxation and creating a feedback loop where the system resists returning to neutral.

Fix: reset fascia, not just strengthen
Strengthening lengthened back muscles alone fails because they cannot recoil without first releasing fascial tension around joints (pecs, traps) and retraining nervous system patterns.

Effective approach: manual release/stretching of short tissues, fascial work, then integrated movement (not isolated rows) to rebalance tone and reinforce new positions.
