Quick question... what is your jaw doing RIGHT NOW? 👀

Are your teeth touching? Are you clenching? Or is your jaw actually resting?

You might be surprised how often you catch yourself clenching once you start paying attention.

And the funny thing is, it’s not always when you’re stressed!

Sometimes it’s while you’re concentrating on work, driving, scrolling through your phone, or just going about your day.

For some people, this extra jaw muscle activity can contribute to that familiar tight, tired, achy feeling.

And being told to “just relax your jaw” isn’t always particularly helpful when you don’t even realize you’re clenching in the first place.

That’s why one of the first things we can work on is awareness.

Not checking your jaw every 30 seconds or trying to hold it in some perfect position all day.

Just starting to recognize when you’re clenching, giving your teeth a chance to separate, and figuring out what situations tend to bring the habit on.

Of course, clenching isn’t the explanation for everyone’s jaw pain, and daytime clenching is different from what might be happening while you sleep.

But if this sounds familiar, it’s something we can work on!

This is Pattern 1 of 5 in our jaw pain series, where we’re breaking down some of the different patterns that can contribute to TMJ symptoms.

Tell me in the comments: When do you catch yourself clenching the most?

And if you’re ready for help understanding and managing your jaw symptoms, comment TMJ and let’s chat!

Has someone ever told you that your bite is the reason for your jaw pain?

Maybe your teeth don’t feel like they’re fitting together properly, or you’ve been told that adjusting your bite could finally solve your TMJ problems.

But here’s something I really want you to know...

Just because your bite feels off doesn’t automatically mean it’s causing your jaw pain.

There are so many things that can contribute to TMJ symptoms, including muscle tension, changes in jaw movement, joint function, and other factors that might have nothing to do with how your teeth line up.

And while bite changes may be appropriate for certain dental concerns, permanently changing your bite isn’t a routinely recommended treatment for TMJ pain alone.

That doesn’t mean you should never have dental work done. It means we need to be asking better questions before making changes that can’t easily be undone.

What’s actually contributing to your symptoms? What evidence do we have that changing your bite will help? And are there other options worth exploring first?

Because you deserve to understand WHY a treatment is being recommended, not just be told it’s the next thing to try.

If you’ve been considering having your bite adjusted because of TMJ pain, save this post and take these three questions to your next appointment.

And if you’re ready to look at the bigger picture of your jaw pain, comment TMJ and let’s chat!

Ever feel like you’ve tried EVERYTHING for your jaw, but you’re still dealing with the same symptoms?

Maybe you’ve tried a night guard, stretches, massage, relaxation exercises, or a combination of all of them.

And maybe some things helped for a little while, but you still feel like you’re going around in circles.

Here’s something I want more people to understand: not all jaw pain looks the same, and not everyone needs the same approach.

For some people, clenching and muscle tension are a big part of the picture. For others, the neck, sleep, joint movement, or increased pain sensitivity may be contributing.

And for many people, it’s a combination of things!

These aren’t five separate diagnoses or boxes you have to fit into. They’re five common patterns that can help us start asking better questions about what’s going on.

Because treating jaw pain shouldn’t mean handing everyone the exact same list of exercises and hoping for the best.

Over the next 5 weeks, I’m going to break down each of these patterns, what they can look like, and what we might need to consider when managing them.

I’m curious... which pattern sounds most like you? 👀

Comment 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 below. You can absolutely pick more than one!

And if you’re tired of guessing what your jaw needs, comment TMJ and let’s chat about getting you started with a more individualized approach.

These are the kinds of wins I LOVE seeing in my clients’ weekly check-ins 💚

Because when you’re dealing with TMJ pain, it’s so easy to measure your progress by one thing: how much does my jaw hurt today?

And yes, less pain is a HUGE win. But it’s not the only one.

Being able to go out for dinner and order what you actually want. Catching yourself doing an old jaw habit without having to think so hard about it. Having a flare that settles quicker than it used to. Or simply feeling like you finally have some control over what’s happening with your jaw.

Those things matter too.

I always encourage my clients to share one win each week, even if it feels small. Because sometimes the progress you aren’t paying attention to is the progress that tells us the most.

And these? These are real wins from real clients. 🥹

What’s one green flag you’ve noticed in your own jaw journey? I’d love to hear it.

And if you’re struggling to see any progress at all, comment TMJ and let’s talk about where to start.

Your jaw has enough going on without the internet giving it another 47 rules to follow. 🙃

Stop clenching. Don’t eat that. Avoid opening too wide. Never chew gum. Keep your jaw in the perfect position.

Sound familiar?

When you’re dealing with jaw pain, it’s understandable to want to do EVERYTHING right. Especially when you’re getting different advice from every direction.

But here’s the thing: not every piece of advice applies to every jaw.

Sometimes modifying what you eat is helpful. Sometimes you need to work on awareness of your clenching habits. Sometimes you need to temporarily adjust certain movements.

And sometimes, the very things you’ve been told to avoid are things we actually want to help you get comfortable doing again.

That’s why I’m such a big believer in individualized jaw rehab.

Not just handing everyone the same exercises or giving them another list of things they shouldn’t do, but understanding what’s happening with THEIR jaw and building a plan around it.

Because the goal isn’t to spend the rest of your life managing a growing list of restrictions.

It’s to get back to eating, talking, laughing, yawning and doing the things you enjoy with more comfort and confidence.

Comment TMJ if you’re tired of guessing what your jaw needs and want some guidance that’s specific to you.

Hope gets treated like a personality trait. You’re either glass-half-full or you’re not. But hope is actually a skill: a goal, a pathway to it, and the belief you can get there.

This means on the days it feels gone, you’re not broken, one of those three pieces just needs rebuilding.

Hope is trainable. So is your jaw. Comment TMJ if you’re ready for support in your TMJD journey

Imagine having jaw pain for as long as you can remember.

You do the braces.
You have jaw surgery.
And yet… you’re still dealing with daily jaw pain, headaches and upper body tension.

That was Julie.

And this line from her review stopped me:

“I think I have had 2 total jaw-related headaches since working with her.”

TWO. 😭

She also shared that she’s now able to manage and alleviate her symptoms on most days, and that fitting her stretches and exercises into her work day has made a huge difference.

This is why we care so much about giving you things that actually fit into your real life. Not a perfect routine you can only do when you have endless time.

Julie ended her review with:

“I wish I would have found her years ago!!!”

We’re pretty damn glad you found us too 🥹🩵

These are real answers from our clients’ weekly check-ins, and THIS is the kind of progress we love to see.

Because getting better isn’t only about waking up one day completely pain free. It’s also about getting pieces of your normal life back along the way.

And yes, every single one deserves a gold star ⭐️

One of the hardest things about rehab is thinking everything has to mean one thing or the other.

My jaw clicked, so I must be getting worse.
I had a pain-free week, so I must be done.
Stress made my symptoms worse, so the pain must be “just stress.”
I had a setback, so I’m back at square one.

But bodies rarely work in such neat little boxes.

Your jaw can click AND be getting stronger.

You can have a really good week AND still have capacity to build.

Stress can influence what you feel AND your pain can be very real.

You can modify something when you need to AND still be moving forward.

And a flare or setback doesn’t erase everything you’ve built up to that point.

Progress isn’t always a straight line from symptoms → no symptoms. Sometimes we need to zoom out and look at what else is changing: what you can tolerate, what you can do, how you respond when symptoms show up, and whether your overall capacity is growing.

There can be a lot of AND in rehab.

If you’re tired of feeling like every symptom means you’re doing something wrong, comment TMJ and let’s talk about what support could look like for you.

But honestly, the number isn’t even my favourite part of Maddie’s story.

Before starting, she was dealing with daily jaw pain, popping and clicking, and couldn’t open past 20mm without her jaw shifting.

Now she can comfortably open to 43mm without the shift.

And then there are these two wins:

“My jaw does not get tired almost at all.”

“It hasn’t shifted out of place once.”

More opening is great. But being able to move your jaw with more confidence, less fatigue, and actually understanding your TMJD and how to help it? THAT’S the stuff we love to see.

So happy for you, Maddie!
