A brief break from our fun and child centered posts to check in with all you parents, grandparents and siblings….
Is there enough conversation and support for parents handling the grief aspect of discovering their child has a disability or delay? An immediate loss that accompanies the unexpected news seems to only grow with each birthday. There is much focus on the child and what interventions he or she should schedule out. But where does the parent turn to seek support for handling the unexpected, the often shocking and emotionally draining news that something is different. Even more importantly, when and how does a parent find the healing while carrying the weight of this bag full of questions, concerns, loneliness, emptiness, pressure, challenge, meltdowns, exhaustion, judgement, wonders, hopes, disappointments, mourning of a future that may not be, sibling experiences, juggling everyone’s needs, diet changes, supplements, medications, therapies, IEP’s, endless appointments and research as it is ever evolving and impossible to stay with the latest trend and nuance of discoveries.
One statement a parent never says to their newborn baby is this….”I can’t wait to meet your speech/occupational/physical therapist.”
We see and hear you Moms and Dads. Grandmas and Grandpas. Sisters and brothers. Your family is special and deserving of time, support, sharing and healing as your family shapes around this acceptance and change. We welcome your stories and your precious children while doing our very best to facilitate growth and independence in all areas of development.
Let’s keep this very important conversation going. We welcome you to leave comments here about how your journey has unfolded.
