Pressure is a privilege. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ†

The postseason is here, and with it comes the nerves: win or go home, bigger crowds, tougher opponents, higher stakes. Feeling that pressure doesnโ€™t mean something is wrong. It means this moment matters to you, and you earned your spot on this stage.

The goal isnโ€™t to get rid of the pressure. Itโ€™s to decide how youโ€™ll prepare for it before it shows up:

When the pressure is on, I will breathe.
When the pressure is on, I will trust my training.
When the pressure is on, I will focus on the next play.
When the pressure is on, I will lean on my teammates.
When the pressure is on, I will enjoy it.

Now itโ€™s your turn. Finish the sentence in the comments: โ€œWhen the pressure is on, I will ____.โ€ ๐Ÿ‘‡

Good luck to every athlete heading into the postseason this weekend or next week.

Reminder: Trust your training, support your teammates, and enjoy the moment.

Olympic gold medals. World records. Presidential Medal of Freedom. All achieved with ADHD. ๐Ÿ…

Swipe to hear from Olympians Alysa Liu, Noah Lyles, Michael Phelps, and Simone Biles on what ADHD has meant for their athletic careers.

ADHD often gets talked about only in terms of whatโ€™s hard: impulsive thoughts, restlessness, a mind that wonโ€™t slow down. Those challenges are real. But many athletes with ADHD also describe strengths like high energy, the ability to hyperfocus, and feeling at home in fast-changing, high-pressure moments.

The difference-maker isnโ€™t getting rid of ADHD. Itโ€™s understanding how your brain works and building the skills to work with it. That might mean finding the environment where you feel most in control, learning to manage the mental noise before competition, or channeling energy into your sport instead of fighting it.

At Grow Sport Psychology, this is the work we love: helping athletes understand how they think and build mental skills that fit them. If you or your athlete has ADHD, remember that it can be a source of strength, not just a hurdle.

Athletes with ADHD often spend years hearing what theyโ€™re doing wrong: โ€œFocus.โ€ โ€œSlow down.โ€ โ€œPay attention.โ€

Over time, they may start to see only their mistakes and miss their strengths, which can affect their confidence and performance on the field. Parents and coaches can help them see what they bring to the game: ๐Ÿ’š

โœ… Name it in the moment. โ€œThat was a creative read. Thatโ€™s a strength of yours.โ€
โœ… Ask, donโ€™t tell. โ€œWhen do you feel most locked in?โ€ Their answers show you what works.
โœ… Look back at their best games. What was different? Build on it.
โœ… Try โ€œShe focuses best with short, direct cuesโ€ instead of โ€œShe canโ€™t focus because of ADHD.โ€

Athletes: Think back to your best performances. What were you doing, feeling, and focusing on? Thatโ€™s your strength showing up.

ADHD isnโ€™t something to overcome before you can compete. Itโ€™s part of how you compete. When athletes learn to recognize their strengths and get the right support, they stop trying to play like everyone else and start playing like themselves.

ADHD in athletes is often misunderstood. It's not about a lack of effort or ability. It's about a brain that works differently, and with the right support, that difference can become a strength.

Research suggests 4-8% of athletes have ADHD, and many more may go undiagnosed. Stigma and misunderstanding can keep athletes from speaking up, so they get labeled as unmotivated, distracted, or "too much" when what they need is support.

Let's break the stigma and talk openly about ADHD in sport. Understanding starts with listening, and support starts with all of us.

At Grow Sport Psychology, we help athletes build focus, manage emotions, and perform with confidence in ways that work for their mind. We proudly support athletes with ADHD and work to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and create a space where every athlete feels understood.

The best athletes don't just show up ready. They know exactly how ready to be.
Write your number down before you compete, and save this for game day.

There's no single "right" energy level for competition. The best level for you depends on you, your sport, and even your role on the team.

Some athletes perform best calm and locked in. Others need to be fired up and ready to attack. A golfer lining up a putt and a sprinter in the blocks usually need very different energy.

Too low, and you can feel flat and slow to react. Too high, and you can feel rushed, tense, and unfocused. Your sweet spot is in between, and it's one you can learn.

Here's how to find it:
โœ… Notice your number before practices and competitions
โœ… Pay attention to what you felt like in your best performances
โœ… Practice adjusting up or down so it's a skill you've trained, not something you hope happens

Your challenge: grab a notebook or your notes app and finish this sentence:
"To get from ___ to ___, I need to ______."

You don't need to be at a 10 to perform your best. You need to know where YOU compete best, and how to get there. Check it. Adjust it. Compete. ๐ŸŽฏ

Coaches, take a timeout.
You spend your season making sure your athletes are prepared: the practice plans, the game strategy, the pep talks, the late nights, and the tough conversations with players and parents. But who's checking in on you?

Here's something we talk about often at Grow Sport Psychology:

The way you handle pressure, stay focused, and manage your emotions on the sideline sets the tone for your entire team. Athletes feel it when you're calm and confident, and they feel it when you're stressed and stretched thin. Your mindset shapes your team's culture, their confidence, and how they remember their playing experience long after the final score is forgotten.

Coaching is demanding, and burnout, frustration, and self-doubt are real. Taking a moment to pause, reflect, and reconnect with your purpose isn't a sign of weakness. It's part of performing at your best. Take a minute to reflect on the questions in this post. Be honest with yourself, then save it so you can come back to it when the season gets heavy.

Did you know we work with coaches, too? Our sport psychology services aren't just for athletes.

๐ŸŒธ Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 to October 15 ๐ŸŒธ

At Grow Sport Psychology, we honor the passion, resilience, and cultural pride that Hispanic and Latino athletes, coaches, and communities bring to sport and beyond. This month is a reminder that identity and performance are deeply connected and the strength athletes carry into competition is often rooted in family, culture, and community.

We're proud to support athletes of every background on their journey to elite performance.

Remember and Recognize Your Strengths!

As the season moves forward, it's easy to get swept up in the next game, the next rep, the next thing to improve. We're taught to chase growth by looking at what's missing but rarely do we pause to notice what's already there.

Your strengths aren't just the highlight-reel moments. They're the things you do so naturally that you've stopped noticing them, the calm you bring under pressure, the way teammates lean on you without knowing why, the skill you worked so hard for that now feels like second nature.

Take a few minutes this week to sit with the questions above. Not to perform an answer, but to actually reflect. Write down what comes up for you: the moments, the compliments you've brushed off, the qualities that show up when you're playing your best.

Let yourself really see what you bring to your team and to the game.
Because knowing your strengths isn't about ego. It's about having something steady to return to when the season gets hard, a reminder of who you are as an athlete, even on the days it's difficult to see.

Know it. Remember it. Let it carry you.
